🔧 Rear Brakes and Rotors - Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads and rotors on your Rogue restores stopping power, reduces noise, and fixes pulsing or shaking from worn rotors. This job is straightforward if you work one side at a time and keep the caliper supported so the brake hose is not strained.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the front wheels.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Let the brakes cool before starting if the vehicle was just driven.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Support the caliper with wire or a hanger so the brake hose is not stretched.
  • Your Rogue uses a standard mechanical parking brake, so no electronic parking brake reset is needed.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Brake dust can irritate skin and eyes.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool
  • Bungee cord or mechanic's hook
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • High-temperature brake grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Loosen the rear lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Release the parking brake before removing the rear rotors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the rear of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the rear support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove the rear wheels using a 19mm socket.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) during reassembly.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it with a bungee cord.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
  • Keep the hose relaxed.

Step 3: Remove the brake pads and bracket

  • Slide the brake pads out of the bracket.
  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs) during reassembly.

Step 4: Remove the old rotor

  • If the rotor is stuck, thread two wheel nuts on a few turns to hold it.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the rotor retainers if needed.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If the parking brake shoes are holding the rotor, make sure the parking brake is fully released.

Step 5: Clean the hub and inspect parts

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
  • Spray the hub with brake cleaner and wipe it dry.
  • Check the caliper slide pins for smooth movement.
  • Replace any worn hardware or damaged clips.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
  • Install the rotor on the hub.
  • Use a lug nut finger-tight to hold it in place if needed.

Step 7: Install the bracket and pads

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket using a 17mm socket.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake grease to the pad contact points on the bracket.
  • Install the new pads and hardware.
  • Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs) for the bracket bolts.

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston and reinstall the caliper

  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool to slowly push the piston back in.
  • Make sure the piston boot does not twist or tear.
  • Set the caliper back over the pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts with a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs) for the slide pin bolts.

Step 9: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and start all lug nuts by hand.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts with a 19mm socket.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) in a crisscross pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times before moving the vehicle. This seats the caliper piston.
  • Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
  • Test the brakes at low speed first.
  • Listen for rubbing, clicking, or grinding.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
