  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and release the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
  • Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; keep the cap sitting loosely on top so pressure can vent while you compress pistons.
  • Tip: If the reservoir is very full, remove a little fluid.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the rear

  • Lift the rear at the proper jack point using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at solid support points.
  • Remove both rear wheels using a 21mm socket and ratchet.

Step 2: Remove the rear caliper (keep it supported)

  • Turn the steering wheel is not needed for the rear; just position yourself for access.
  • Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the suspension spring using a bungee cord.
  • A bungee cord is an elastic strap used to hold the caliper so the brake hose is not stretched.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the brake pads out of the bracket by hand or carefully with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Remove the pad clips/hardware from the bracket using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Clean the bracket pad-contact areas with brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two caliper bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If it’s stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat firmly with a rubber mallet to break it free.
  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and wipe with shop towels.
  • Apply a very thin film of anti-seize compound to the hub face to help prevent the rotor from sticking in the future.

Step 6: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels (new rotors often ship with protective oil).
  • Install the rotor onto the hub.
  • Hold it in place by threading on 1-2 lug nuts by hand (no need to tighten) using the 21mm socket.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper bracket with new hardware clips

  • Install the new pad clips from the rear brake pad hardware kit onto the bracket.
  • Reinstall the bracket and start the bolts by hand, then tighten with a 17mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 8: Compress the caliper piston

  • Remove the old inner pad and place it against the piston face.
  • Compress the piston slowly using a C-clamp (6-inch) or disc brake piston compression tool (specialty) until it’s fully seated.
  • A piston compression tool pushes the caliper piston back so thicker new pads will fit.
  • Watch the brake fluid level while compressing; wipe any spills immediately with shop towels.

Step 9: Install the new pads

  • Apply a thin layer of brake caliper grease (silicone brake lubricant) to the pad “ears” where they slide in the clips.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Tip: Do not get grease on pad friction material.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Set the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install and tighten the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 11: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheels and snug the lug nuts using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lower the Highlander off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other rear side

  • Repeat Steps 2 through 11 for the other rear wheel.
  • Replace rear pads and rotors as a pair (left and right) for even braking.

âś… After Repair

  • 🦶 Pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • With the engine running, confirm the pedal stays firm and the vehicle does not creep when braking.
  • Test the parking brake holding power on a gentle slope.
  • Bed-in the brakes: make 6-10 moderate stops from ~35 mph to ~5 mph, with cool-down driving between stops.
  • Tip: Avoid hard stops for 200 miles.
