🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the rear wheels, take off the rear brake calipers, replace the brake pads and rotors, then reassemble and verify everything works safely. This job matters because worn pads/rotors reduce stopping power and can damage the calipers if ignored.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and chock the front wheels.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a jack alone—support the rear with jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Brakes make dust—wear a mask and use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ If your Grand Cherokee has an electronic parking brake (EPB), it must be retracted before pushing the caliper pistons in.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep ignition OFF unless entering EPB service mode.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • C-clamp brake compressor tool
  • Brake caliper hanger hook (specialty)
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Torx T30 bit
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Catch pan
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Dust mask

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake rotors - Qty: 2
  • Brake cleaner spray - Qty: 1-2
  • High-temp silicone brake grease - Qty: 1
  • Threadlocker (blue) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, steering straight, and keep the transmission in P.
  • Chock both front wheels.
  • Release the parking brake before lifting the rear.
  • If equipped with EPB: plan to retract EPB before compressing the pistons. EPB retract = puts motors in service position.
  • Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; you’ll monitor level so it doesn’t overflow when compressing pistons.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and lift the rear

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the rear lug nuts 1/2 turn (don’t remove yet).
  • Use a floor jack to lift the rear at the rear jacking point, then support with jack stands at the rear support points.
  • Remove the lug nuts with a 21mm socket and take both rear wheels off.

Step 2: Retract the electronic parking brake (if equipped)

  • If your Grand Cherokee has an EPB switch, retract it before piston compression.
  • Preferred method: Use a capable scan tool to run EPB Service/Pad Replacement Mode (wording varies by tool).
  • If your Grand Cherokee does not have EPB (mechanical parking brake), skip this step.

Step 3: Remove the rear caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel is not needed for the rear; just position yourself comfortably.
  • Use a 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the two rear caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it using a brake caliper hanger hook (specialty). Never let it hang by the hose.
  • Torque spec (reinstall later): Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)

Step 4: Remove old brake pads and inspect hardware

  • Pull the pads out of the bracket by hand; use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
  • Inspect the pad clips (hardware). If your new pads include new clips, you’ll replace them.

Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and set it aside.
  • Torque spec (reinstall later): Torque to 169 Nm (125 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the rotor

  • If equipped with a rotor retaining screw, use a Torx T30 bit to remove it.
  • If the rotor is stuck, strike the rotor hat (center area) with a rubber mallet to break it free.
  • Remove the rotor.

Step 7: Prep the hub and install the new rotor

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face (where the rotor sits). A clean hub prevents rotor wobble.
  • Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner spray to remove packing oil, then wipe clean.
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
  • If your rotor uses a retaining screw, install it with a Torx T30 bit.

Step 8: Service the bracket and install new pad hardware

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove old pad clips from the bracket (if replacing).
  • Clean the clip lands (where clips sit) with a wire brush.
  • Install the new pad clips by hand.
  • Pull the slide pins out (one at a time), wipe clean, then apply a thin coat of high-temp silicone brake grease and reinstall.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Apply a small amount of threadlocker (blue) to the bracket bolt threads.
  • Install the bracket bolts using an 18mm socket and ratchet, then tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 169 Nm (125 ft-lbs)

Step 10: Compress the caliper piston

  • Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap to prevent pressure buildup (keep it clean).
  • Use a C-clamp brake compressor tool to slowly push the caliper piston back into the caliper.
  • If it won’t compress, stop—EPB may not be retracted.
  • Watch the reservoir level; use a catch pan if you need to remove a little fluid (do not spill on paint).
  • A brake compressor is a tool that pushes the piston in evenly.

Step 11: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Install the new pads into the bracket by hand (match inner/outer if different).
  • Set the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 21mm socket to torque lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs)

Step 13: Restore EPB function (if equipped)

  • Use your scan tool to exit EPB service mode and run any “apply/initialize” function if prompted.
  • Cycle the EPB on/off using the EPB switch to confirm normal operation.

✅ After Repair

  • With engine OFF, press the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 only if needed.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal stays firm.
  • Do a slow test drive in a safe area and confirm no grinding, pulling, or warning lights.
  • Pad break-in: make 6-10 moderate stops from ~30 mph to 5 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450-$900 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $270-$450 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-3 hours.
