🔧 1500 - Rear Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement
You’ll remove the rear wheels, take the caliper and bracket off, swap the rotors, then install new pads and reassemble with the correct torque. This job matters because worn pads/rotors reduce stopping power and can damage the calipers if ignored.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Assumption: your 1500 has rear disc brakes with a drum-in-hat parking brake (no electronic parking brake).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands before working underneath.
- 🛞 Chock the front wheels and keep the truck on level ground.
- 🔥 Brakes get hot—let everything cool before touching rotors/calipers.
- 🧴 Avoid breathing brake dust; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- 🧯 Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
- 🔒 Make sure the parking brake is released before removing rear rotors (it’s inside the rotor “hat”).
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Lug wrench or 22mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 1/2" drive breaker bar
- Torque wrench (30–250 ft-lbs range)
- 13mm socket
- 21mm socket
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- C-clamp (6" minimum)
- Wire hook or bungee cord
- Dead-blow hammer
- Small wire brush

- Brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
- Brake parts cleaner - Qty: 2 cans
- Anti-seize compound - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and release the parking brake.
- Chock both front wheels using wheel chocks.
- Loosen rear lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 22mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
- Lift the rear with a floor jack and support the axle with jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear wheels
- Finish removing the lug nuts using a 22mm socket and ratchet.
- Remove both rear wheels and set them aside.
Step 2: Remove the brake caliper (floating caliper)
- Locate the two caliper slide pin bolts on the back of the caliper.
- Remove the bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
- Lift the caliper off the pads/rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using a wire hook or bungee cord (never let it dangle by the hose).
Step 3: Remove the caliper bracket
- Remove the two large bracket bolts using a 21mm socket and breaker bar.
- Set the bracket aside.
Step 4: Remove the rotor (and free a stuck rotor if needed)
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If the rotor is stuck, tap around the rotor “hat” with a dead-blow hammer to break rust loose.
- If it still won’t come off, use a flat-blade screwdriver to back off the parking brake adjuster through the access slot (drum-in-hat inside the rotor). Small turns make a big difference.
Step 5: Clean and prep the hub surface
- Clean the hub face with a small wire brush to remove rust scale.
- Spray the area with brake parts cleaner and let it dry.
- Apply a very thin film of anti-seize compound to the hub face (avoid wheel studs and braking surfaces).
Step 6: Install the new rotor
- Clean the new rotor with brake parts cleaner (removes shipping oil).
- Slide the rotor onto the hub.
- If the rotor won’t slide on easily, the parking brake shoes may be adjusted too tight—use a flat-blade screwdriver to back off the adjuster slightly.
Step 7: Service the caliper bracket and hardware
- Remove the old pad clips from the bracket using a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Install new clips from the hardware kit by hand (they snap into place).
- Apply a thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) where the pad “ears” touch the clips.
- Pull the slide pins out one at a time, wipe clean, then apply fresh brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) and reinstall.
- Reinstall the bracket and tighten bracket bolts using a 21mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Remove the brake master cylinder cap under the hood (this helps fluid move back).
- Place the old inner pad against the piston face, then compress the piston slowly using a C-clamp.
- Go slow to avoid damaging the seal.
Step 9: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper
- Install the new pads into the bracket by hand.
- Slide the caliper over the new pads/rotor.
- Install the caliper slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall wheels
- Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the truck, then torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- 🦶 Pump the brake pedal slowly until it feels firm (this seats the pads).
- 🧪 Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- 🔍 Check for leaks and make sure both rear wheels spin freely with the parking brake released.
- 🛣️ Perform pad/rotor break-in: make 8–10 moderate stops from ~40 to 10 mph, with cool-down driving between stops.
- ⚠️ Avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles if possible.
