🔧 Escalade - Rear Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

This job replaces the rear brake pads and rotors on your Escalade. Worn pads/rotors can cause grinding, vibration, longer stopping distances, and uneven braking.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone—support the rear with jack stands under the frame.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust and cleaner are irritating—wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed (the piston can pop out).
  • ⚠️ If your Escalade has an electronic parking brake (EPB), it must be put in service mode before compressing the rear pistons.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with a drum-in-hat parking brake inside the rear rotor, do not disturb/inhale shoe dust; keep hardware organized.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 22mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" or 1/2")
  • Socket extension (3" to 6")
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor (specialty)
  • Wire brush
  • Rubber mallet
  • Bungee cord or mechanics wire
  • Small wire hook pick
  • Catch pan
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake rotors - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1
  • Brake lubricant (silicone brake grease) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1-2 cans
  • DOT 3 brake fluid - Qty: 1 quart

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock both front wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Crack the rear lug nuts loose before lifting using a 22mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Open the hood and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap (leave it sitting on top loosely). This helps fluid return when you compress pistons.
  • Take a photo of each side before disassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Verify parking brake type (important)

  • Look for an electronic parking brake switch on the dash/console versus a pedal/lever cable setup.
  • If you have an EPB switch, you must retract the parking brake for service before pushing the caliper pistons in.
  • Reply with: “EPB switch” or “foot pedal/cable”. If EPB: also tell me if you have a scan tool that can run EPB Service Mode.

Step 2: Lift the rear and remove wheels

  • Lift the rear with a floor jack and support with jack stands under the frame.
  • Remove the rear wheels using a 22mm socket and ratchet.

Step 3: Remove the rear caliper

  • Locate the two caliper guide pin bolts on the back of the caliper.
  • Remove the guide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee cord or mechanics wire (do not let it hang by the hose).
  • “Caliper” is the clamp that squeezes the pads.

Step 4: Remove brake pads and hardware

  • Slide the old pads out of the bracket by hand.
  • Remove the pad hardware/clips using a small wire hook pick or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Clean the bracket pad landing areas with brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.
  • Keep left/right parts separate.

Step 5: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two caliper bracket bolts using an 18mm socket, breaker bar, and extension.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • “Caliper bracket” is the metal frame pads sit in.

Step 6: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If stuck, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet to break rust loose.
  • If your Escalade has a parking brake drum inside the rotor: if the rotor won’t come off, the shoes may be holding it—stop and tell me, and I’ll walk you through backing off the adjuster correctly.

Step 7: Prep the hub and install the new rotor

  • Clean rust off the hub face using a wire brush and brake cleaner spray.
  • Install the new rotor and hold it in place with a couple lug nuts hand-tight (use the old lug nuts by hand only).
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.

Step 8: Reinstall caliper bracket

  • Reinstall the bracket bolts using an 18mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 170 Nm (125 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Install new pad hardware and pads

  • Install new hardware/clips into the bracket by hand (use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to seat them).
  • Apply a thin film of brake lubricant (silicone brake grease) where the pad ears slide on the hardware (do not get lube on friction surfaces).
  • Install the new pads into the bracket.

Step 10: Compress the caliper piston

  • Before compressing, place a catch pan under the reservoir area in case it overflows.
  • If your Escalade has EPB: do not force the piston in until EPB is in service mode (tell me EPB details from Step 1 and I’ll give the exact method for your setup).
  • If no EPB service mode is required, compress the piston slowly using a C-clamp or brake caliper piston compressor (specialty).
  • Watch the brake fluid level while compressing; remove excess if it gets too high.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Reinstall the guide pin bolts using a 13mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 38 Nm (28 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the wheels and snug lug nuts using a 22mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lower the Escalade off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before moving the Escalade, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal stays firm.
  • If equipped with EPB, apply and release the parking brake and confirm it operates normally.
  • Bed-in the pads (basic): make 6-10 moderate stops from 35 mph to 5 mph, allowing a little cooling between stops; avoid hard stops for the first 200 miles.
  • Test drive slowly first, listen for scraping, and re-check for leaks or anything loose.
