🔧 CX-50 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll be removing the rear wheels, swinging the rear calipers up, swapping the pads and hardware, then compressing the caliper pistons and reassembling everything. On your CX-50, the rear brakes use an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), so you must put the EPB into maintenance/service mode before pushing the pistons back.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on flat, solid ground and support your CX-50 on jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Put the EPB into maintenance mode before compressing rear caliper pistons, or you can damage the EPB system.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
- ⚠️ Brake dust and cleaner are irritants—wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose saved settings; it’s not required for this job.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
- Confirm your EPB can enter maintenance mode before lifting the vehicle.
- Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting (do not remove yet).
- Take a photo of pad orientation first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the EPB into maintenance (service) mode
- Turn ignition ON (engine OFF).
- Use the EPB switch and brake pedal to command maintenance mode (this retracts the parking brake motors so the pistons can be pushed back).
- If the switch-sequence method doesn’t work on your CX-50, use a scan tool capable of EPB service mode (specialty) to run the “EPB Maintenance Mode/Pad Replacement Mode” function.
Step 2: Lift the rear and remove both rear wheels
- Use floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the rear, then set the vehicle on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Use 21mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to remove lug nuts and pull both rear wheels off.
- Reinstall lug nuts finger-tight on one stud to keep the rotor from wobbling (optional).
Step 3: Access the rear caliper and remove the lower caliper bolt
- Turn the steering slightly by hand if you need more arm room (rear access is tight).
- Use 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide-pin bolt.
- Carefully swing the caliper upward like a hinge.
- Support the caliper with a small bungee cord so it doesn’t hang by the brake hose.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware clips
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use flat plastic trim tool to pop out the stainless pad clips (hardware) from the bracket.
- Use wire brush and brake cleaner spray to clean the pad “shelves” where the clips sit (clean metal helps prevent sticking and squeaks).
Step 5: Install new hardware and prep the new pads
- Snap the new clips from the rear brake pad hardware kit into the bracket by hand (ensure they sit flat).
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease where the pad ears contact the clips (metal-on-metal contact points only).
- Do not get grease on pad friction material or rotor.
Step 6: Compress the rear caliper piston
- Make sure your CX-50 is still in EPB maintenance mode.
- Use disc brake piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the caliper piston straight back into the caliper bore.
- Go slowly and keep the tool aligned so the piston doesn’t cock sideways.
Step 7: Install new pads and reassemble the caliper
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand (they should slide freely in the clips).
- Swing the caliper back down over the new pads.
- Use 14mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench (5–60 Nm range) to tighten the lower slide-pin bolt: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall both rear wheels and hand-start all lug nuts.
- Lower your CX-50 off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Use 1/2" drive torque wrench (20–200 Nm range) with a 21mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Exit EPB maintenance mode
- Use the EPB switch procedure (or scan tool function) to exit maintenance mode and return the EPB to normal operation.
âś… After Repair
- With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
- Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal stays firm.
- Apply and release the EPB to confirm normal operation and no warnings.
- Do a cautious test drive: low speed first, then a few moderate stops.
- Avoid hard stops for 200 km.
