🔧 Atlas - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Rear pad replacement is straightforward, but many Atlas trims use an electronic parking brake (EPB) that must be put into service mode before you can push the rear caliper piston back. Doing it the wrong way can damage the EPB motor or caliper.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
  • ⚠️ Support the Atlas with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • ⚠️ If your Atlas has an EPB, do not force the piston back without service mode.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful; avoid compressed air and wear a mask.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm lug socket
  • Breaker bar 1/2"
  • Torque wrench 1/2" (20-200 Nm range)
  • Ratchet 3/8"
  • Socket set 3/8" (10mm-19mm)
  • Hex bit socket set (metric)
  • Torx bit socket set (T25-T45)
  • Brake caliper piston tool (specialty)
  • Pick tool
  • Flat trim tool
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Bungee cord
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask
  • Scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1
  • Brake lubricant (silicone or synthetic) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, put the transmission in Park, and chock the front wheels.
  • 🧯 Let brakes cool completely; hot parts can burn you and skew fitment.
  • 🔌 If your Atlas has an EPB, plan to use a scan tool to retract it (service mode) before pushing the piston back.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir; be ready to remove a little fluid if it rises when pistons are pushed in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm whether you have an EPB rear caliper

  • Look at the parking brake control: if there’s a console switch (usually a “P” icon), you have EPB.
  • Also look behind the rear caliper: an EPB caliper has a small electric motor housing with a wiring connector.
  • If you tell me which you have, I’ll finish with exact steps.

Step 2: Put the rear brakes into service mode (EPB only)

  • Connect your scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty) to the OBD port.
  • Use the scan tool function for Parking Brake > Service/Repair Mode > Open/Retract.
  • This retracts the EPB motor so the piston can be pushed back safely.
  • Service mode prevents EPB motor damage.

Step 3: Loosen the rear wheel bolts and lift the rear

  • Use a 17mm lug socket and breaker bar 1/2" to loosen (do not remove) the rear wheel bolts on the side you’re starting with.
  • Lift with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper rear jacking point and set the Atlas on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).

Step 4: Remove the wheel

  • Remove the wheel bolts using a 17mm lug socket and take the wheel off.
  • During reassembly: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench 1/2".

Step 5: STOP here so I can give the correct caliper-specific procedure

  • Rear caliper fastener sizes and required torque values vary by rear brake system, and EPB vs non-EPB changes the piston retraction method.
  • Answer the two quick questions below and I’ll provide the remaining steps with the correct torque specs and exact tool sizes.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Pump the brake pedal slowly until it feels firm before you drive.
  • 🧴 Recheck brake fluid level and top up only to the MAX line if needed.
  • 🅿️ If EPB: use the scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty) to Close/Initialize the parking brake after pads are installed.
  • 🔊 Expect a mild smell for the first drive; avoid hard braking for the first 200-300 km.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹6,000-₹15,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹2,500-₹8,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹3,500-₹7,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-2.0 hours.

Please answer these 2 questions so I can finish the exact procedure:

  • ❓ Does your Atlas have an electronic parking brake switch (EPB) or a manual parking brake?
  • ❓ Can you upload a clear photo of the rear caliper (side view), or tell me if there’s an electric motor with a wiring plug on the back of the caliper?
