🔧 Rear Brake Pads - Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads on your Tiguan means safely lifting the vehicle, retracting the rear caliper piston, swapping the pads, and reassembling the brake hardware. Rear VW calipers usually need the piston turned back in, not just pushed, so the right tool matters here.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on level ground and chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
  • Use jack stands under the approved lift points. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • If the rear caliper piston will not retract, use a brake caliper compression tool. On this Tiguan, the piston may need to be turned back in.
  • Keep the parking brake released before disassembly.
  • After reassembly, pump the brake pedal before moving the vehicle.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in gear and chock the front wheels.
  • Loosen the rear wheel bolts slightly before lifting.
  • Release the parking brake before removing the rear calipers.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the rear of the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the rear of your Tiguan at the approved lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the rear support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Remove both rear wheels with the 17mm lug socket and ratchet.
  • Keep the vehicle stable before reaching under it.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

  • Use the 13mm socket to remove the rear caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Slide the caliper off the bracket carefully.
  • Hang the caliper with a bungee cord or brake caliper hanger. Do not let it hang by the hose.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Lift the old pads out of the bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and springs from the bracket.
  • Use the wire brush to clean rust from the pad contact points.
  • Spray the bracket with brake cleaner and wipe it dry with shop towels.

Step 4: Retract the rear caliper piston

  • Use the brake caliper compression tool (specialty) to turn and press the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Move slowly and keep the piston aligned so the rubber boot does not twist.
  • Do not force it.

Step 5: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips and springs from the rear brake pad set or brake hardware kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad ears and contact points only.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.

Step 6: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install the guide pin bolts with the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install the rear wheels and hand-tighten the lug bolts.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench and 17mm lug socket to torque the wheel bolts.
  • Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Settle the pads

  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Make sure the parking brake operates normally before driving.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and press the brake pedal firmly before shifting into gear.
  • Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
  • Listen for rubbing or clicking that could mean a pad is not seated correctly.
  • For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless needed for safety.
