🔧 CX-5 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement
Replacing the rear brake pads means removing the rear wheels, swinging the rear calipers out of the way, and installing new pads and hardware. On your CX-5, the key “gotcha” is the rear Electronic Parking Brake (EPB)—it must be put into a service/maintenance mode before you compress the rear caliper pistons.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack—use jack stands on solid, level ground.
- ⚠️ If your CX-5 has EPB, do not force the rear piston in without EPB service mode—you can damage the caliper/EPB motor.
- ⚠️ Brake dust and cleaner are irritating—wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- ⚠️ Don’t let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a hanger.
- Battery disconnect is usually not required, but keep ignition OFF unless you’re placing EPB into service mode.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and chock the front wheels with wheel chocks.
- Confirm whether your CX-5 has an EPB switch (button switch near the shifter) or a manual foot/hand parking brake.
- If you have EPB: plan how you’ll enter EPB maintenance/service mode:
- Preferred: use a scan tool with Mazda EPB service function (specialty) (not required for the rest of the job).
- If you do not have a scan tool: use the factory EPB maintenance-mode procedure from your owner’s/service information for your exact switch setup.
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen rear lug nuts 1/2 turn before lifting.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the rear
- Use a floor jack to lift the rear at the correct jacking point, then set the vehicle on jack stands.
- Remove the rear wheels using a 21mm socket and ratchet.
Step 2: Put the parking brake system into service mode (EPB only)
- If your CX-5 has EPB, keep the vehicle safely supported on jack stands before commanding service mode.
- Use a scan tool with Mazda EPB service function (specialty) and select the EPB pad replacement/maintenance mode for the rear calipers.
- If unsure, stop and confirm EPB mode first.
Step 3: Remove the caliper from the bracket
- Locate the two caliper slide/guide pin bolts on the back of the rear caliper.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the two slide pin bolts.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the pads and hang it with a bungee cord so the brake hose isn’t stretched.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out by hand. If they’re stuck, gently pry with a flat trim tool.
- Remove the pad clips (hardware) from the caliper bracket using the flat trim tool.
- Clean the bracket pad lands (where clips sit) using brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.
Step 5: Compress the rear caliper piston
- Make sure the caliper is supported by the bungee cord.
- Use a caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston straight back into the caliper.
- Go slowly and keep the piston square. Slow compression prevents seal damage.
Step 6: Install new hardware and pads
- Install new pad clips from the hardware kit onto the bracket by hand (use a flat trim tool if needed to fully seat them).
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease to pad ears (the metal tabs that slide in the clips). Do not get grease on pad friction material.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
Step 7: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper back over the new pads.
- Reinstall the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten caliper slide/guide pin bolts: Torque to 18-25 Nm (13-18 ft-lbs).
Step 8: If removed, reinstall the caliper bracket (only if you took it off)
- If you removed the bracket, reinstall the bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and ratchet.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten bracket bolts: Torque to 75-95 Nm (56-70 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall wheels
- Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Exit EPB service mode (EPB only)
- Use the scan tool with Mazda EPB service function (specialty) to end maintenance mode and re-apply/initialize the EPB as instructed by the tool.
✅ After Repair
- With the vehicle on the ground, pump the brake pedal slowly until it feels firm (this seats the pads).
- Verify the brake fluid level is between MIN and MAX.
- Test EPB apply/release (EPB only) and confirm no warning lights remain on.
- Do a careful test drive: low speed first, then normal braking.
- Pad break-in: perform several gentle stops; avoid hard braking for the first 150-200 miles.
