🔧 Edge - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads on your Edge means removing the rear calipers, installing new pads (and hardware clips if included), and then correctly re-setting the electronic parking brake system. This is important because the rear brakes often wear unevenly, and the parking brake mechanism can be damaged if it isn’t put into service mode first.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the SUV on jack stands before working under/around wheels.
  • ⚠️ If your Edge has an electronic parking brake (EPB) button, put the EPB into service mode before pushing the caliper piston in, or you can damage the EPB mechanism.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is unhealthy—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid off the pad friction material and rotor faces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 15mm wrench
  • Flat trim tool
  • Brake caliper piston compression tool (specialty)
  • Wire hook or bungee cord
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper grease (silicone/synthetic) - Qty: 1
  • Brake fluid (DOT 4) - Qty: 1 quart

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the front wheels straight, and place wheel chocks at the front tires.
  • Make sure the parking brake is released before lifting the rear.
  • If your Edge has an EPB button, plan to put the EPB into service mode (retract) before compressing the caliper piston.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid level; when you compress pistons, the level rises—remove a little fluid if it’s already at “MAX.”

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm EPB type and retract it (service mode)

  • Look for an electronic parking brake switch (a button) near the shifter area.
  • If equipped, use a scan tool to command EPB maintenance/service mode: EPB > Service/Pad Replacement Mode.
  • EPB service mode retracts the rear motors.

Step 2: Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to crack the lug nuts loose 1/4 turn while the wheel is still on the ground.

Step 3: Lift and support the rear

  • Lift using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the approved rear jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before removing the wheel.

Step 4: Remove the rear wheels

  • Remove lug nuts using the 21mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the caliper from the bracket

  • Turn the steering (or position yourself) so you can access the back of the rear caliper.
  • Remove the two caliper slide bolts using a 13mm socket while holding the slide pin with a 15mm wrench if it wants to spin.
  • Lift the caliper off the pads and hang it using a wire hook or bungee cord (never let it hang by the brake hose).

Step 6: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads out by hand; use a flat trim tool if they’re stuck.
  • If you’re replacing hardware clips, remove the abutment clips from the bracket using the flat trim tool.
  • Spray the bracket pad lands with brake cleaner spray and wipe clean.

Step 7: Compress the rear caliper piston

  • Place the old inner pad against the piston face.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compression tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir level as you compress; don’t let it overflow.

Step 8: Install new hardware and pads

  • Install new abutment clips onto the bracket (if included) by hand.
  • Apply a thin film of brake caliper grease (silicone/synthetic) to the pad ears where they contact the clips.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
  • Grease metal-to-metal only, never pad material.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper

  • Position the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide bolts using the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) using the 3/8" drive torque wrench.

Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using the 21mm socket and 1/2" drive torque wrench: Torque to 183 Nm (135 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Exit EPB service mode and seat the pads

  • If EPB equipped, use the scan tool to exit service mode: EPB > Close/Exit Service Mode.
  • With the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm.
  • Start the engine and press the brake pedal again to confirm a firm pedal.

âś… After Repair

  • Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 4 only if needed.
  • Test the electronic parking brake operation (apply/release) while stopped.
  • Do a slow test drive and verify no grinding, pulling, or warning lights.
  • Pad bed-in: do 6-8 moderate stops from 35 mph to 10 mph, then drive to cool the brakes.
