🔧 Renegade - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll remove the rear wheels, swing the rear brake caliper out of the way, replace the pads/hardware, then compress the caliper piston so everything fits back together. The key difference on your Renegade is whether it has an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB)—if it does, you must put it into service mode before pushing the piston back.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the Renegade on jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🧤 Brake dust is harmful—wear nitrile gloves and a dust mask; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • 🔥 Brakes can be hot—let everything cool before starting.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with EPB, retract it with a scan tool service mode before compressing the piston, or you can damage the caliper/EPB actuator.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not usually required for pad replacement, but keep the key/fob away and don’t cycle the ignition with the calipers removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • Torque wrench (20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm wrench
  • 18mm socket
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • C-clamp brake piston compressor
  • Disc brake piston wind-back cube tool (specialty)
  • Bungee cord
  • Wire brush
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Dust mask
  • Scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake pad hardware kit (clips/abutments) - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone brake lubricant) - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and chock the front wheels.
  • Release the parking brake completely before lifting.
  • If you have an EPB button (electronic parking brake), plan to use a scan tool with EPB service mode before compressing pistons.
  • Quick check: EPB = button/switch, not a hand lever.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and lift the rear

  • Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the rear lug nuts 1/2 turn (don’t remove yet).
  • Use a floor jack to lift at the rear jacking point, then set the Renegade on jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts with a 19mm socket and remove both rear wheels.

Step 2: If equipped, put the EPB into service mode

  • If your Renegade has an EPB button, connect a scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty) and command Rear EPB > Service Mode/Pad Replacement.
  • EPB service mode retracts the parking brake motor.
  • If you have a manual hand/foot parking brake (no EPB button), skip this step.

Step 3: Remove the caliper and old pads

  • Turn the steering slightly if needed for access, and locate the rear caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts while holding the pin flats with a 15mm wrench if the pins spin.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it with a bungee cord (do not let it hang by the brake hose).
  • Remove the inner and outer pads by hand; use a flathead screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.

Step 4: Clean and service the bracket hardware

  • Remove the pad clips/abutments from the bracket with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Clean the bracket pad “lands” with a wire brush, then spray with brake cleaner spray.
  • Install the new clips from the hardware kit.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Open the brake fluid reservoir under the hood (don’t remove fluid yet—just loosen the cap so pressure can vent).
  • Watch the reservoir while compressing—fluid can rise and overflow.
  • If the piston pushes straight in: use a C-clamp brake piston compressor to slowly press the piston fully back.
  • If the piston must be rotated while pushing: use a disc brake piston wind-back cube tool (specialty) to turn and press the piston in. (This tool is a small cube that fits on the piston face so you can rotate it.)

Step 6: Lubricate slide pins and install new pads

  • Pull the slide pins out one at a time, wipe them clean, then apply a thin coat of brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone brake lubricant).
  • Reinstall the slide pins and make sure the rubber boots seat properly.
  • Install the new inner/outer pads into the bracket (match the old pad positions).
  • Only grease slide pins—never pad friction surfaces.

Step 7: Reinstall caliper and torque fasteners

  • Set the caliper over the new pads.
  • Install the caliper slide pin bolts using a 13mm socket (hold pins with a 15mm wrench if needed).
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) for rear caliper slide pin bolts.
  • If you removed the caliper bracket (only if needed for stuck hardware): reinstall bracket bolts with an 18mm socket and torque wrench; Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the Renegade off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Use a torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Exit EPB service mode (if equipped)

  • If you used EPB service mode, use the scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty) to command EPB > Close/Initialize after everything is reassembled.

âś… After Repair

  • With the vehicle still parked, press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm. This seats the pads against the rotors.
  • Check brake fluid level at the reservoir and top off only if needed.
  • Test at low speed first, then do a few gentle stops to confirm normal braking.
  • Avoid hard stops for the first 150-200 miles.
