- Open the hood and check brake fluid level; when you compress pistons the level rises. Don’t let it overflow.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the rear of the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the rear at the proper rear jacking point.
- Set the car onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) placed under solid rear lift/support points.
- Remove the rear wheels using a 19mm socket.
Step 2: Locate the rear caliper and remove the caliper bolts
- Turn the steering wheel is not needed for the rear; position yourself for clear access.
- Remove the two caliper slide-pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque to 26 N·m (19 ft-lbs) during reassembly.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it gently with a wrench while removing the bolt.
Step 3: Support the caliper (do not hang by the hose)
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang it from the suspension spring using a bungee cord.
- Never let the caliper dangle by the brake hose.
Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware
- Slide the inner and outer pads out of the bracket by hand; use a flathead screwdriver if they’re stuck.
- Remove the pad hardware clips (stainless “abutment” clips) from the bracket if you’re replacing them.
- Clean the bracket pad lands (where clips sit) using brake cleaner spray and a wire brush.
Step 5: Compress the caliper piston
- Place the old inner pad against the piston face.
- Use a C-clamp to slowly press the piston straight back into the caliper.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood as you compress; wipe spills with a catch rag.
- Go slow to avoid damaging the piston seal.
Step 6: Install new hardware and pads
- Install new abutment clips from the rear brake pad hardware kit into the bracket.
- Apply a thin film of silicone brake grease to pad ears where they contact the clips. Keep grease off pad friction material.
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
Step 7: Reinstall the caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads and align the slide-pin bolt holes.
- Install the slide-pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten using a 14mm socket and then Torque to 26 N·m (19 ft-lbs).
Step 8: If you removed the caliper bracket (only if needed)
- If you had to remove the bracket for access, reinstall bracket bolts using a 17mm socket.
- Torque to 65 N·m (48 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall wheels
- Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
- Lower the car using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a torque wrench (20–150 ft-lbs range).
- Torque to 120 N·m (89 ft-lbs).

- Press the brake pedal slowly 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons to the new pads).
- Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Verify the parking brake holds properly. If it feels weak, the rear parking brake may need adjustment.
