🔧 Durango - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads restores braking power and prevents rotor damage when pads get thin. Your Durango may have either Brembo fixed rear calipers (pads held in by pins) or a standard sliding caliper (pads behind the caliper bracket), so I’ll give you both paths.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground, chock the front wheels, and support the rear with jack stands before removing any wheels.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while pads are out or caliper is loosened.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ If your Durango has an electronic parking brake (EPB), it must be put in service mode before compressing pistons.
  • ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint; check the reservoir level while compressing pistons.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for pads, but keep the ignition OFF if using EPB service functions.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Lug wrench or 22mm socket
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (1/2", 20-200 ft-lbs range)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Small hammer
  • Pin punch set (3mm-6mm)
  • Socket set (13mm, 15mm, 18mm)
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Torque wrench (3/8", 10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty)
  • Scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty)
  • Wire hook or bungee cord
  • Wire brush

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake pad hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • High-temp brake lubricant - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1
  • DOT 4 brake fluid - Qty: 1 bottle

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks at the front tires.
  • 🛑 If you have an EPB switch (button), plan to use a scan tool to retract the EPB into service mode before compressing pistons.
  • 🧪 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. As pistons compress, fluid rises—be ready to remove a little if it nears “MAX”.
  • 🔍 Identify your rear caliper type:
    • Brembo fixed caliper: pads held by visible cross-pins and a spring clip.
    • Sliding caliper: caliper has two slider bolts (typically on the inboard side).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and raise the rear

  • Use a lug wrench or 22mm socket with a breaker bar (1/2") to loosen rear lug nuts 1/2 turn.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the rear at the proper jacking point, then set it on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the wheel using a lug wrench or 22mm socket.

Step 2: Put the parking brake system in the correct state

  • If equipped with EPB: use a scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty) and run the rear EPB “service/retract” function. Do this before piston compression.
  • If equipped with a mechanical parking brake: fully release it (foot pedal or hand lever), then confirm the rear rotor turns freely by hand.

Step 3: Inspect pads/rotors and locate hardware

  • Use safety glasses and inspect pad thickness and rotor condition.
  • Use a flashlight (from your phone is fine) to confirm whether you have Brembo pin-retained pads or a sliding caliper with slider bolts.

Step 4A: Brembo fixed rear caliper - remove the pads

  • Use needle-nose pliers to help remove/relieve the pad spring clip (anti-rattle spring), if accessible.
  • Use a pin punch set (3mm-6mm) and small hammer to drive the pad retaining pins out. Support the punch squarely to avoid bending pins.
  • Pull the pads out of the caliper by hand. If stuck, use a flathead screwdriver gently to start them moving.

Step 4B: Sliding rear caliper - remove the caliper and pads

  • Use a ratchet (3/8") and socket set (13mm, 15mm, 18mm) to remove the caliper slider bolts (bolt size varies by hardware).
  • Lift the caliper off and hang it using a wire hook or bungee cord—do not let it hang by the hose.
  • Remove the inner and outer pads from the bracket by hand.

Step 5: Compress the caliper pistons

  • Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston(s) back until fully seated.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; remove excess if needed (do not overflow).
  • Go slow to protect seals.

Step 6: Clean and prep contact points

  • Spray parts with brake cleaner to remove dust and old residue.
  • Use a wire brush to clean pad slide/contact points on the bracket (sliding caliper) or pad abutment areas (Brembo).
  • Apply a thin film of high-temp brake lubricant to pad ears/contact points and the pad backing plate where it touches pistons (avoid pad friction material).

Step 7A: Brembo fixed rear caliper - install new pads and pins

  • Slide new pads into place by hand (match inner/outer orientation if different).
  • Reinstall the spring clip and retaining pins using a pin punch set (3mm-6mm) and small hammer until fully seated and secure.
  • Double-check the pins are locked and the clip is correctly seated.

Step 7B: Sliding rear caliper - install new pads and reassemble

  • Install new pad hardware (clips) from the rear brake pad hardware kit by hand.
  • Install new pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Reposition the caliper over the pads.
  • Tighten the caliper slider bolts using a ratchet (3/8") and correct socket, then Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (3/8").
  • If you removed the caliper bracket: tighten bracket-to-knuckle bolts with a breaker bar (1/2") and torque wrench (1/2"), then Torque to 169 Nm (125 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Install the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle enough for the tire to touch the ground, then torque lugs in a star pattern using a torque wrench (1/2"): Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reactivate parking brake system (if EPB)

  • If equipped with EPB: use the scan tool with EPB service mode (specialty) to exit service mode and apply/release the EPB once.

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 With the engine OFF, pump the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads).
  • 🧴 Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 4 brake fluid if needed.
  • 🧪 Test drive at low speed first. Confirm no grinding, pulling, or warning lights.
  • 🔥 Pad bedding (recommended): make 6-10 medium stops from ~40 mph down to ~10 mph, allowing short cool-down between stops. Avoid hard stops while the brakes are very hot.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹8,000-₹18,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹3,500-₹12,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹4,500-₹6,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates in Panipat vary, but many run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-2.0 hours.
