🔧 X3 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll remove the rear wheels, retract the rear caliper pistons (these are tied to the electronic parking brake), swap the pads (and the wear sensor if equipped), then reassemble and bed-in the pads. The key “gotcha” on your X3 is putting the rear electronic parking brake (EPB) into service mode before compressing the pistons.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

Assumption: Rear brakes use BMW’s EPB at the calipers (common on this X3).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the X3 with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
  • ⚠️ Put the electronic parking brake into service mode before retracting pistons, or you can damage the EPB mechanism.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • ⚠️ If brake fluid is near “MAX,” remove a little to prevent overflow when compressing pistons.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 1/2" drive torque wrench (20-200 Nm range)
  • 7mm hex bit socket
  • 16mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Flat trim tool
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Brake caliper piston compression tool (specialty)
  • Hook pick tool
  • Wire brush
  • Bungee cord
  • Catch pan
  • Brake cleaner
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Scan tool with BMW EPB service mode (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake pad wear sensor - Qty: 1
  • Brake caliper slide pin grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
  • Brake anti-squeal paste - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, steering straight, and chock the front wheels.
  • 🅿️ Make sure the electronic parking brake is released before lifting.
  • 🧰 Connect your scan tool and select EPB > Service Mode / Pad Replacement Mode before you remove anything.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and check brake fluid level; be ready with a catch pan and a clean syringe/turkey baster if you need to remove a little.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen rear wheel bolts

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to crack the rear wheel bolts loose about 1/2 turn (do not remove yet).

Step 2: Lift and support the rear safely

  • Use a floor jack to lift the rear at the correct jacking point.
  • Set the X3 down onto jack stands and keep the wheel chocks in place.
  • Remove the rear wheels using the 17mm socket.
  • Tip: Slide wheels under the rocker as backup.

Step 3: Put the EPB into service mode

  • Use your scan tool with BMW EPB service mode (specialty) and command Rear EPB > Service/Pad Replacement Mode (this retracts/unloads the EPB actuator).
  • Wait for the scan tool to confirm the procedure is complete.
  • Tip: Don’t skip this—prevents EPB damage.

Step 4: Unplug the rear pad wear sensor (if equipped)

  • Locate the wear sensor wire at one rear wheel (commonly left rear).
  • Use a small flat screwdriver and trim tool to open the connector housing and disconnect it.
  • Use a hook pick tool to free the wire from its clips (don’t yank).

Step 5: Remove the caliper from the bracket

  • Use a small flat screwdriver to carefully pry off the caliper spring clip (if present).
  • Remove the two caliper guide bolts using a 7mm hex bit socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor and hang it with a bungee cord (do not let it dangle by the hose).

Step 6: Remove old pads and prep the bracket

  • Pull the inner and outer pads out by hand (use a flat trim tool if they’re stuck).
  • Use brake cleaner and a wire brush to clean pad contact points on the bracket (where the pad “ears” slide).
  • Apply a thin film of caliper slide pin grease to pad contact points (not on pad friction material).

Step 7: Compress the rear caliper piston

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir first (under the hood). Place a catch pan under it just in case.
  • Use a brake caliper piston compression tool (specialty) to slowly press the piston straight back into the caliper.
  • If the piston won’t go in smoothly: stop and re-check that EPB service mode is active.
  • Tip: Go slow to avoid fluid overflow.

Step 8: Install new pads and sensor

  • Apply brake anti-squeal paste to the pad backing plates where they touch the caliper (keep it off the friction surface).
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Install the new wear sensor into the pad (it “clicks” into place), then route the wire exactly like the original and reconnect it.

Step 9: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners

  • Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Install caliper guide bolts using the 7mm hex bit socket and ratchet.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs) for rear caliper guide bolts.
  • Reinstall the spring clip (if removed) using a flat screwdriver.

Step 10: Reinstall wheels and torque wheel bolts

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread bolts.
  • Lower the X3 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Torque wheel bolts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Exit EPB service mode

  • Use the scan tool to command EPB > Close/Initialize/End Service Mode (wording varies by tool).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before driving, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm.
  • ✅ Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • ✅ Turn ignition on and verify no brake/EPB warnings remain (use scan tool to clear any stored codes if needed).
  • ✅ Bed-in the pads: make 6–10 moderate stops from 50→15 km/h (30→10 mph), allowing short cool-down between stops.
  • ✅ Do a slow test drive and listen for abnormal scraping or pulling.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹8,000-₹18,000 (parts + labor)
