  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the truck with jack stands before going under or pulling wheels.
  • 🛑 Chock the front wheels—your Sequoia uses a mechanical parking brake inside the rear rotor hat, so don’t rely on the parking brake while servicing the rear.
  • 🛑 Brake dust is unhealthy; avoid blowing it with air and use brake cleaner instead.
  • 🛑 Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose—support it with a hook/strap.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the engine off.
  • Chock both front wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Release the parking brake fully (foot pedal) so the rear rotors and pads can move freely.
  • Crack the rear lug nuts loose before lifting the truck (don’t remove them yet).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the rear

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the rear at a safe rear jacking point.
  • Set the truck onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) on both sides.
  • Give the truck a firm shake to confirm it’s stable before removing wheels.

Step 2: Remove the rear wheels

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2" breaker bar to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and set them aside.

Step 3: Remove the rear caliper (pads are inside)

  • Turn the steering wheel is not needed for the rear; position yourself for access.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Support the caliper with a bungee cord so the brake hose is not stretched. Never hang it by the hose.

Step 4: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Pull the old pads out of the bracket by hand (a flathead screwdriver can help gently).
  • Remove the pad clips/hardware from the bracket (from your hardware kit).
  • Spray the bracket area with brake cleaner spray and scrub rust with a wire brush.

Step 5: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use a C-clamp brake piston compressor to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly and keep the piston straight as it retracts. Slow is smooth here.

Step 6: Install new hardware and pads

  • Install the new clips from the hardware kit onto the bracket (same positions as removed).
  • Apply a thin film of high-temp brake grease to pad “ears” where they contact the clips (metal-to-metal contact points).
  • Slide the new pads into the bracket.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to install the slide pin bolts.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (20–150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 8: (If needed) Remove and reinstall the caliper bracket

  • If you chose to remove the bracket for cleaning, use a 17mm socket and 1/2" breaker bar to remove the bracket bolts.
  • Reinstall the bracket bolts using a torque wrench (20–150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 122 Nm (90 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall wheels

  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20–150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • đź§Ş Pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
  • đź§Ş Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed (don’t overfill).
  • đź§Ş Do a low-speed test in a safe area: confirm normal stopping, no pulling, and no grinding.
  • đź§Ş Bed-in the pads: do 6–8 moderate stops from ~50 km/h down to ~10 km/h, with short cool-down drives between stops.
