🔧 Rear Brake Pads - Replacement

The rear pads on your Accord are a straightforward brake job, but the rear caliper piston must be turned back in as it compresses. That keeps the parking-brake mechanism and caliper from being damaged. Take your time, keep the brake fluid from overflowing, and replace pads on both sides at the same time.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a flat surface and chock the front wheels.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
  • Rear caliper pistons must be rotated and compressed. A normal C-clamp can damage the caliper.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • Do not let the brake hose hang by itself.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • Torque wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Brake caliper piston rewind tool (specialty)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the rear wheel nuts before lifting the car.
  • Raise the rear and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Release the parking brake before removing the caliper.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket to loosen and remove the wheel nuts.
  • Take the wheel off and set it aside.
  • Keep the lug nuts together.

Step 2: Access the caliper

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the small caliper bracket clips if present.
  • Inspect the brake hose and caliper for cracks or leaks before moving on.

Step 3: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with wire if needed.
  • Do not let the brake hose carry the caliper weight.

Step 4: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the old pads out of the bracket.
  • Remove the pad clips and clean the bracket with a wire brush and brake cleaner.
  • Clean metal makes the new pads slide better.

Step 5: Retract the rear caliper piston

  • Use a brake caliper piston rewind tool (specialty) to turn and push the piston back into the caliper.
  • Rotate the piston slowly while applying inward pressure until it is fully seated.
  • If the brake fluid reservoir is too full, remove a small amount of fluid before compressing.

Step 6: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Install the new pad clips in the bracket.
  • Apply a thin coat of brake grease to the pad contact points and slide surfaces.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads in the correct positions.

Step 7: Reinstall the caliper

  • Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Use a 14mm socket to install the slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle, then use a 19mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the rear pads on the other side before driving.
  • Do both sides together so braking stays even.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times before moving the car.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
  • Test the brakes at low speed first.
  • Listen for rubbing or clicking noises.
  • New pads may need a short break-in period for best stopping power.
