🔧 Camry - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

You’ll be removing the rear wheels, swinging the rear brake calipers out of the way, and swapping in new pads. This restores safe braking and prevents rotor damage when pads get thin.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🛞 Chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
  • 🔥 Brakes can be hot; let them cool before touching.
  • ⚡ Hybrid safety: keep the car OFF (not in READY) and keep keys away so it can’t start while you’re working.
  • 🧴 Avoid getting grease on pad friction material or rotor surfaces.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)
  • C-clamp (6" minimum)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Wire brush
  • Bungee cord
  • Brake parts cleaner spray
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
  • Rear brake pad hardware kit (clips/shims) - Qty: 1
  • Silicone brake lubricant - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and make sure the car is OFF.
  • Release the parking brake (rear calipers must be free to move).
  • Open the hood and check brake fluid level; if it’s near “MAX,” be ready for it to rise when you compress the pistons.
  • Loosen rear lug nuts slightly using a 21mm socket before lifting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the rear

  • Chock the front wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Lift the rear with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the correct rear jacking point.
  • Set the car onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under safe support points.

Step 2: Remove the rear wheels

  • Remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Remove both rear wheels and set them aside.

Step 3: Locate the rear caliper and hardware

  • The caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads onto the rotor.
  • Find the two rear caliper slide pin bolts (the bolts that let the caliper slide as pads wear).

Step 4: Remove the caliper slide pin bolts

  • Remove the two slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • If the slide pin wants to spin, hold it carefully with needle-nose pliers while you loosen the bolt.

Step 5: Lift the caliper off (do not let it hang)

  • Carefully lift the caliper off the pads/rotor. Use a flathead screwdriver gently if you need a little leverage.
  • Support the caliper with a bungee cord so it’s not hanging by the rubber brake hose.

Step 6: Remove old pads and hardware

  • Pull the old pads out by hand. If stuck, use a flathead screwdriver gently.
  • Remove the pad clips/shims from the bracket (these often come with the hardware kit).
  • Clean the bracket pad “shelves” with a wire brush and spray with brake parts cleaner spray.

Step 7: Compress the caliper piston

  • The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the inner pad.
  • Place an old pad against the piston face, then slowly compress using a C-clamp (6" minimum).
  • Compress until the piston is fully seated so the new, thicker pads will fit.
  • Go slow—watch brake fluid level.

Step 8: Install new pad hardware and lubricate contact points

  • Install new clips/shims from the rear brake pad hardware kit by hand.
  • Apply a thin film of silicone brake lubricant to pad ears where they slide in the clips.
  • Apply a thin film of silicone brake lubricant to caliper slide pin surfaces if they were removed and are clean.
  • Do not lubricate the pad friction surface or rotor.

Step 9: Install the new pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Make sure pads slide freely in the clips; if tight, re-clean with wire brush and brake parts cleaner spray.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper back over the new pads by hand (it should fit if the piston is fully compressed).
  • Install and tighten the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall wheels

  • Reinstall wheels and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • With the car still OFF, pump the brake pedal 10–15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pads against the rotors).
  • Check brake fluid level and adjust if needed (do not overfill).
  • Do a slow test drive and confirm normal braking and no grinding noises.
  • Pad bed-in (break-in): Make 6–10 gentle stops from ~30 mph to 5 mph, with cool-down time between stops. Bedding helps pads transfer an even layer to the rotor.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $50-$120 (parts only)
