🔧 Sierra 1500 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement
You’ll be removing the rear calipers, swapping the old pads for new ones, and then reassembling everything with correct torque. This restores braking performance and prevents metal-to-metal damage to the rotors.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on level ground and chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
- 🛑 Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- 🛑 Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is off the rotor.
- 🛑 Keep the parking brake RELEASED during rear pad service (it can clamp the rear system).
- 🛑 Brake dust is unhealthy—use brake cleaner, not compressed air.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Rear brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) - Qty: 1
- Disc brake caliper grease (silicone) - Qty: 1
- Brake fluid (DOT 3) - Qty: 1 bottle
- Rear brake rotors - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on a flat surface, shift to Park, and release the parking brake.
- Chock both front wheels.
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid level; plan for it to rise when you compress the pistons.
- If fluid is already at the MAX line, remove a little with a syringe before compressing pistons.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen lug nuts and lift the rear
- Use the 22mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the rear wheel lug nuts about 1 turn (do not remove yet).
- Lift the rear with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the rear jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
- Remove the wheels using the 22mm socket.
Step 2: Remove the rear brake caliper
- Turn the steering wheel straight and look at the rear caliper: you’ll see two caliper guide bolts on the back.
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide bolts.
- If the guide pin spins, hold it with a 15mm wrench while loosening with the 13mm socket.
- Lift the caliper off the rotor and hang it with a bungee cord so the brake hose isn’t stretched. Never let caliper hang by hose.
Step 3: Remove old pads and hardware
- Slide the inner and outer pads out by hand; use a flat blade screwdriver gently if they’re stuck.
- Remove the pad hardware (abutment clips) from the bracket with the flat blade screwdriver.
- Use brake cleaner spray to clean the bracket and surrounding area.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the pad “landing” areas where the clips sit.
Step 4: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use the C-clamp brake piston compressor to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it doesn’t overflow.
- Slow compression helps protect seals.
Step 5: Install new hardware and pads
- Install the new abutment clips from the rear brake pad hardware kit (abutment clips) into the bracket by hand.
- Apply a thin film of disc brake caliper grease (silicone) where the pad ears touch the clips (metal-to-metal contact points only).
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
Step 6: Reinstall the caliper and torque fasteners
- Slide the caliper back over the new pads.
- Reinstall the caliper guide bolts using the 13mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet (hold the pin with the 15mm wrench if needed).
- Use the torque wrench: Torque caliper guide bolts to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts
- Reinstall the wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
- Lower the truck off the stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Use the torque wrench and 22mm socket: Torque lug nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
âś… After Repair
- With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal 10-15 times until it feels firm (this seats the pistons against the new pads).
- Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 only if needed.
- Do a cautious test drive: confirm normal pedal feel and no pulling/noise.
- Pad break-in: make 8-10 moderate stops from 50 km/h to 15 km/h, letting brakes cool 30-60 seconds between stops.
