🔧 Rear Brake Pads and Rotors - Replacement

Replacing the rear pads and rotors on your Accord restores braking performance and removes pedal pulsation or noise. On this model, the rear calipers must be serviced correctly so the pads can slide freely and the parking brake system is not damaged.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Your Accord may be equipped with an electronic parking brake. Put it in brake service mode before compressing the rear calipers.
  • Never press the brake pedal with a caliper or rotor removed.
  • Support the car securely on jack stands. Do not work with only a floor jack.
  • Rear brakes get hot. Let the car cool before starting.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Brake dust should not be inhaled.
  • If the electronic parking brake is active, do not force the rear pistons back without service mode.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the transmission in neutral and chock the front wheels.
  • Release the parking brake.
  • If your Accord has electronic parking brake service mode, activate it before opening the rear calipers.
  • Loosen the rear lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Prepare the car

  • Use the 19mm socket to loosen both rear wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the car is still on the ground.
  • Chock the front wheels.
  • Lift the rear of the car with the floor jack and support it on jack stands.

Step 2: Remove the rear wheel

  • Use the 19mm socket to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it aside.
  • Keep the nuts in a tray.

Step 3: Set the rear caliper into service condition

  • If equipped, put the electronic parking brake into service mode before touching the caliper.
  • Use the 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee cord or caliper hanger.

Step 4: Remove the brake pads and caliper bracket

  • Remove the inner and outer pads from the bracket.
  • Use the 17mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
  • Check the slide pins for smooth movement.

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • If the rotor has a retaining screw, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver or the correct flat blade screwdriver if damaged.
  • Pull the rotor off the hub.
  • If it is stuck, tap the rotor hat lightly and use a flat blade screwdriver through the access slot to help release it.

Step 6: Clean and inspect

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
  • Spray the hub and bracket with brake cleaner.
  • Inspect the slide pins, pad clips, and rubber boots.
  • Replace any damaged hardware from the brake hardware kit.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

  • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner before installation.
  • Slide the rotor onto the hub.
  • Install the rotor retaining screw if equipped.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Install the caliper bracket with the 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Install the new pads

  • Install the new pad clips from the brake hardware kit.
  • Apply a light coat of brake grease to the pad contact points if included with your pad set.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads in the bracket.
  • Do not get grease on the friction material.

Step 10: Compress the rear caliper piston

  • Use the brake caliper rewind tool (specialty) or C-clamp or brake piston compression tool (specialty) as required for the rear caliper design.
  • Compress the piston slowly and evenly until the caliper fits over the new pads.
  • Make sure the piston face is seated correctly before continuing.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper

  • Install the caliper over the new pads using the 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts with the 19mm socket.
  • Lower the car enough that the tire touches the ground.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

Step 13: Repeat on the other side

  • Perform the same steps on the opposite rear brake.
  • Always replace pads and rotors in pairs.

✅ After Repair

  • Press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • If equipped, exit electronic parking brake service mode.
  • Check that the parking brake works correctly.
  • Test drive at low speed and listen for noises.
  • Bed in the new pads with a few gentle stops from low speed.
