🔧 Rear Brakes and Rotors - Replacement
The rear brake pads and rotors on your RAV4 wear together, so replacing both at the same time gives the best braking feel and helps prevent noise and vibration. This job is straightforward if you take your time, keep the brake parts clean, and compress the caliper piston correctly before reassembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat surface and keep the parking brake released only when the vehicle is safely lifted and supported.
- Use jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
- Keep grease, oil, and brake fluid off the pad and rotor friction surfaces.
- On your RAV4, the rear parking brake is mechanical, so no electronic parking brake service mode is needed.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and chock the front wheels.
- Loosen the rear lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Set the parking brake before lifting, then release it once the rear wheels are off the ground and the vehicle is fully supported.
- Open the hood and make sure the brake fluid reservoir is not overfilled before compressing the caliper pistons.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the rear of the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the rear of your RAV4 at the proper rear lift point.
- Place jack stands under the rear support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Remove both rear wheels with the 21mm lug wrench or socket.
Step 2: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the caliper slide bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it with the brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the hose stretch.
Step 3: Remove the brake pads and bracket
- Pull the old brake pads out of the bracket by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
Step 4: Remove the rotor
- If the rotor is stuck, use the flat screwdriver to back off the parking brake shoe adjuster through the access hole if needed.
- Tap the rotor hat area with the rubber mallet until it comes free.
- Remove the rotor from the hub.
- Rust can make this step stubborn.
Step 5: Clean and inspect the hardware
- Use the wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
- Spray the hub and bracket with brake cleaner.
- Inspect the slide pins, boots, and pad clips. Replace any damaged hardware.
Step 6: Install the new rotor and bracket
- Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner before installation.
- Install the rotor on the hub.
- Reinstall the caliper bracket with the 17mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 79 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Install new pads and prepare the caliper
- Apply a thin layer of silicone brake grease to the pad contact points on the bracket and the pad ears.
- Install the new rear pads and hardware clips.
- Use the C-clamp to compress the caliper piston slowly until it is fully seated.
- Compress the piston slowly and evenly.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper back over the new pads.
- Install the slide bolts with the 14mm socket and torque wrench.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle
- Install the rear wheels and snug the lug nuts with the 21mm lug wrench or socket.
- Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.
- Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern with the torque wrench.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Press the brake pedal several times before moving the vehicle to seat the pads against the rotors.
- Check brake fluid level and top off only if needed.
- Test the brakes at low speed first.
- Listen for rubbing, clicking, or grinding.
- For the first 200 miles, avoid hard stops unless necessary.
