🔧 RAV4 - Rear Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement

You’ll remove the rear wheels, take off the rear brake calipers and brackets, replace the rear rotors and brake pads, then reassemble and torque everything correctly. This restores braking performance and prevents noise/vibration caused by worn pads or warped rotors.

  • 🛑 Support the RAV4 with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🧱 Chock the front wheels; you’ll need the parking brake released at times.
  • 🔥 Brakes can be hot; let them cool before starting.
  • 🧴 Avoid breathing brake dust; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
  • 🪝 Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose; hang it with a hook/strap.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and shut the engine off.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
  • 🔓 Slightly loosen the rear lug nuts using a 21mm socket and breaker bar before lifting.
  • 🧯 Plan to release the parking brake when you remove the rotors (the parking brake is a small drum brake inside the rotor “hat,” which can hold the rotor on).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the rear

  • Use a floor jack to lift the rear at a safe lift point, then set the vehicle onto jack stands.
  • Remove both rear wheels using a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the rear caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel straight (rear work is easier with the wheels off and straight).
  • Remove the two caliper slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the suspension using a bungee cord or caliper hook. Never hang by the hose.

Step 3: Remove pads and inspect

  • Pull the old pads out of the bracket by hand (use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if stuck).
  • Remove pad hardware clips from the bracket using a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Inspect the caliper boots and slide pins for tears/rust (they should move smoothly).

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Remove the two bracket bolts using a 17mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • When reinstalling later: Torque to 79 Nm (58 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the rotor

  • Release the parking brake.
  • If the rotor is stuck, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts into the rotor’s extraction holes and tighten evenly with a ratchet until the rotor pops loose.
  • If it still won’t come off, tap around the rotor hat with a rubber mallet.
  • If it’s stuck because of the parking brake shoes inside, lightly back off the parking brake adjuster through the access hole using a flat-blade screwdriver (turn the star wheel a few clicks at a time until the rotor slides off).

Step 6: Clean and prep the hub and bracket

  • Clean the hub face with a wire brush and brake cleaner spray, then wipe with shop towels. A clean hub helps prevent rotor wobble.
  • Clean the caliper bracket pad “rails” (where the pad ears sit) using a wire brush.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels to remove protective oil.
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.

Step 8: Reinstall the bracket and hardware

  • Reinstall the caliper bracket using a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 79 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new pad hardware clips into the bracket by hand (use a flat-blade screwdriver to fully seat if needed).

Step 9: Service the slide pins

  • Pull the slide pins out (one at a time), wipe clean with shop towels, and apply a thin coat of brake caliper slide pin grease.
  • Reinsert pins and confirm they move smoothly.

Step 10: Compress the caliper piston

  • Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap under the hood (leave it sitting loosely).
  • Compress the caliper piston slowly using a C-clamp brake piston compressor until it’s fully seated.
  • Watch the reservoir level; remove fluid if it’s near overflowing. Use shop towels to catch spills.

Step 11: Install new pads and reinstall the caliper

  • Install the new pads into the bracket.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease to pad ears where they contact the clips (do not get grease on pad friction material).
  • Set the caliper over the new pads and install the slide pin bolts using a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–11 on the other rear wheel.
  • Always replace pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 13: Reinstall wheels and torque lug nuts

  • Reinstall both rear wheels and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the RAV4 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Pump the brake pedal 10–15 times before moving the RAV4 (the pedal should become firm).
  • 🧴 Check brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if needed.
  • 🅿️ Re-apply the parking brake and confirm it holds the vehicle.
  • 🛣️ Test drive at low speed first; confirm no pulling, grinding, or vibration.
  • 🧪 Pad bedding (recommended): make 8–10 moderate stops from ~50 km/h (30 mph) down to ~8 km/h (5 mph), with short cool-down driving between stops.
