🔧 Trailblazer - Fuel Cap Replacement
On many Trailblazer trims, the fuel system is capless (there is no screw-on fuel cap to replace). If yours does have a screw-on cap, replacement is quick and helps prevent EVAP leaks (a common cause of a check engine light).
Quick question: When you refuel, do you twist off a plastic cap, or do you push the nozzle past a spring-loaded flap (capless)?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF, away from sparks/flames, and don’t smoke.
- ⚠️ Don’t top off after the pump clicks off; it can damage the EVAP system.
- ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel odor afterward, stop and re-check the seal/flap.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Trailblazer on level ground and shut the engine off.
- Open the fuel door and wipe away dirt so it can’t fall into the filler neck.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm whether your Trailblazer is capless
- Use a flashlight to look into the filler opening.
- If you see a spring-loaded flap right at the opening, it’s a capless system and there is no fuel cap to replace.
- If you see a threaded neck and a removable cap, continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap (if equipped)
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler-neck sealing surface (the flat ring where the cap seals).
Step 3: Install the new fuel cap (if equipped)
- Thread the new cap on by hand (clockwise) until it seats.
- Continue tightening until you hear/feel it click. Clicks mean it’s properly sealed.
Step 4: If your Trailblazer is capless (no cap), do this instead
- Use a flashlight to inspect the flap area for dirt, ice, or damage.
- Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe the flap sealing area (don’t force the flap open).
- If the flap looks bent, won’t close, or you get a fuel smell/check engine light afterward, the fix is usually the capless filler-neck insert/assembly, not a cap.
✅ After Repair
- Close the fuel door firmly.
- Start the engine and make sure there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If you had a check engine light for an EVAP leak, it may take a few drive cycles to clear after the seal issue is fixed.
