🔧 Kicks - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Kicks, each headlight side typically has a low beam bulb and a high beam bulb. The job is done from the engine bay by unplugging the connector and twisting the bulb out of the headlamp housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the headlights cool fully before touching bulbs (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep metal tools away from the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (commonly H11 on Kicks halogen headlights) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (commonly 9005 on Kicks halogen headlights) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Decide which “both” you mean: both sides (left + right) low beams, or low + high on one side. If you’re not sure, you can remove one bulb first and match it at purchase.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp from the engine bay.
  • Identify the rear bulb sockets: one is low beam and one is high beam (they are separate on most halogen setups).

Step 2: Create working room (if your hands don’t fit)

  • If access is tight, use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to loosen/remove nearby intake duct fasteners (varies by side).
  • If a plastic push-clip is in the way, remove it using a trim clip removal tool (a forked tool that pops clips out without breaking them).
  • Take a photo before moving anything.

Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
  • Use a flashlight to check the O-ring seal came out with the bulb (it should).

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks fully (this is “hand-tight”; there is no bolt torque here).
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean dry cloth before installing.

Step 6: Reconnect the connector and secure anything you moved

  • Push the connector back onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
  • If using optional grease, apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the connector seal area (not on the bulb glass).
  • Reinstall any ducting/fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (snug, do not overtighten).
  • Reinstall any push-clips using the trim clip removal tool to align them, then press them in by hand.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side (replace in pairs)

  • Do the same steps on the other headlight so both sides match in brightness and color.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify both low beams work.
  • Switch to high beams and verify both high beams work.
  • Walk in front of the vehicle and confirm both sides match in brightness.
  • If one side doesn’t light, recheck the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully twisted/locked.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,000-₹3,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹600-₹2,500 (parts only)

You Save: ₹400-₹1,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹500-₹1,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
