🔧 Sequoia - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Sequoia, “headlight bulbs” can mean the low beam, the high beam, or (on some versions) an LED headlight unit where the bulb is not separately replaceable. I’ll show you how to confirm what you have, then the correct replacement steps.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Quick check (2 questions): Are you replacing low beams, high beams, or both? And when you look behind the headlight from under the hood, do you see a round twist-off dust cap (bulb type) or a sealed LED housing with no removable bulb?

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let the headlight area cool for 10+ minutes to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Keep keys out of the vehicle so the lights don’t auto-turn on.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for bulb replacement, but keep metal tools away from the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • Plastic trim clip tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Headlight dust cap (rear cover) gasket - Qty: 2
  • Headlight assembly - Qty: 1-2 (only if equipped with non-serviceable LED headlamps)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlight for access.
  • Identify what you have before buying parts:
    • If you see a twist-off dust cap and a bulb socket, you have replaceable bulbs.
    • If there is no removable bulb and the rear looks sealed (LED module), the “bulb” is typically not replaceable separately and the headlight assembly is serviced instead.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re changing (low vs high)

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight housing on the side you’re working on.
  • There are usually separate rear access points for low beam and high beam. Each will have its own connector.
  • Do one side at a time.

Step 2: Create working room (only if access is tight)

  • If a plastic cover or intake snorkel blocks your hand, remove its clips using a plastic trim clip tool.
  • If a small bracket or cover uses bolts, remove them with a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Set clips/bolts aside so they don’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 3: Remove the dust cap (bulb-type headlights)

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Twist the round rear dust cap by hand to unlock it, then pull it off.
  • If it’s stubborn, re-grip and twist steadily—don’t pry with a screwdriver (it can crack).

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb using your gloved hand.
  • If needed, use a flashlight to find the lock tab location before pulling.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Release the bulb from the housing:
    • If it’s a twist-lock style, rotate the bulb base counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
    • If it uses a retaining clip, unhook the clip by hand and swing it away, then remove the bulb.
  • Use a flashlight to note the bulb’s orientation (tabs/slots) before removing.

Step 6: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)

  • Handle the new bulb with nitrile gloves.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots and install it:
    • For twist-lock: push in and twist clockwise until it locks.
    • For clip type: seat the bulb fully, then re-latch the retaining clip.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with a lint-free wipe and rubbing alcohol, then let it dry.

Step 7: Reconnect connector and reinstall dust cap

  • Push the electrical connector on until it clicks (use your gloved hand).
  • Reinstall the rear dust cap by hand and twist to lock.
  • Make sure the cap is fully seated to keep moisture out.

Step 8: Repeat on the other side, and for the other beam if needed

  • Use the same steps for the opposite headlight.
  • If you’re replacing both low and high beams, complete one beam type first, then move to the other.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 9: If your Sequoia has non-serviceable LED headlamps

  • If you confirm there is no removable bulb, do not force the housing.
  • At that point, the correct repair is typically replacing the headlight assembly, which may also require aiming/leveling checks after install.
  • Reply with a photo of the back of your headlight (under the hood) and I’ll tell you which setup you have and the exact next steps.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify:
    • Low beams work on both sides.
    • High beams work on both sides.
    • No flicker and no “bulb out” warning (if equipped).
  • At night, park 25 ft from a wall and confirm both beams aim evenly (no obvious “one is higher”).
  • If you see fogging/condensation inside the lens after a day, re-check the dust cap seal.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,500-₹4,000 (parts + labor, typical bulb swap)

DIY Cost: ₹800-₹2,500 (parts only, depends on bulb type/brand)

You Save: ₹700-₹1,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary; this job is typically 0.5-1.0 hours.
