🔧 C-HR - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your C-HR, replacing “headlight bulbs” usually means the halogen low and/or high beam bulbs behind each headlamp housing. The job is done from behind the headlight; on one side you may need to move a duct or filler neck for hand room.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10 minutes before touching.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle for wheel-well access, support it with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the headlight switch OFF during the repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Headlamp rear dust caps (if damaged) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the headlight switch is OFF.
  • Lay out the new bulbs and keep them in the package until install.
  • If access is too tight from the engine bay, plan to use the wheel-well method (you’ll raise the front corner and pull back the fender liner).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Use your flashlight and look behind each headlight for the bulb sockets.
  • If your C-HR has a sealed LED headlamp (no removable bulb socket), the “bulb” is not serviceable separately and the headlamp assembly must be replaced (shop-level job). If you see twist-lock bulb sockets, continue.
  • If unsure, tell me: low beam, high beam, or both.

Step 2: Make room behind the headlight (engine-bay access)

  • On the side with tight clearance, remove the intake duct and/or move the washer filler neck as needed.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool (a small forked pry tool for plastic clips) and a flat-blade screwdriver to pop up plastic retainers without breaking them.
  • If a bracket uses bolts, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.

Step 3: Open the headlamp (rear dust cap, if equipped)

  • Reach behind the headlight and remove the rear dust cap by hand (most are a twist-off cap).
  • Set the cap where it won’t get dirty.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Unplug the bulb connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back (no twisting the wires).
  • Remove the bulb by twisting the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pulling it straight out.
  • Use your flashlight to note how the tabs line up before installing the new bulb.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)

  • Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Lock it in by twisting clockwise by hand until it stops (snug, not forced).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 6: Reinstall the dust cap and any removed parts

  • Reinstall the rear dust cap securely by hand (this keeps moisture out).
  • Reinstall any ducts/brackets you moved using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • If you removed plastic clips, press them back in using the trim clip removal tool to align them first.

Step 7: If you can’t reach from the engine bay, use wheel-well access (alternate method)

  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Use the trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove fender-liner clips near the headlight area, then pull the liner back for access.
  • Repeat Steps 3–6 through the opening, then reinstall the liner clips.

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same bulb replacement steps for the other headlight so both bulbs match color and brightness.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify low beams and high beams work on both sides.
  • Walk around the front of your C-HR and confirm both beams match in color and brightness.
  • Check that the rear dust caps are fully seated (prevents condensation inside the lens).
