🔧 4Runner - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your 4Runner, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. The job is mostly “twist-and-remove,” but it’s important not to touch the new bulb’s glass so it lasts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10 minutes (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Keep keys out of the vehicle so lights can’t be turned on accidentally.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid letting tools touch the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • đź’ˇ Switch the headlight stalk to OFF and wait for bulbs to cool.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves (they keep oil off the bulb).
  • 🔎 Quick check: Are you replacing low beams, high beams, or both? The steps are nearly the same, but the bulb type differs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access and identify the correct bulb

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly.
  • Identify the socket you’re replacing:
    • Low beam: typically the larger main headlight bulb (H11).
    • High beam: typically the inner reflector bulb (9005).

Step 2: Make room if your hands don’t fit (only if needed)

  • If access is tight, use a plastic trim tool to gently release any nearby plastic clips that block your hand path.
  • If a small bracket or cover is held by bolts, remove them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Take a photo before moving anything.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Grip the connector (not the wires).
  • Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • If it’s stubborn, use a plastic trim tool to gently help the tab release.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb/socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb’s locking tabs and orientation.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Rotate clockwise until it stops and feels fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully. Clean glass helps bulb life.

Step 6: Reconnect and reassemble

  • Push the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
  • Reinstall any brackets/covers you moved using the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Make sure nothing is resting on the bulb wiring.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the matching bulb on the other headlight (bulbs should be replaced in pairs for even brightness/color).

âś… After Repair

  • đź’ˇ Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides work on the setting you replaced (low and/or high beam).
  • 🔦 Check the beam pattern against a wall at night—both sides should look even.
  • 🧰 If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is fully locked.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
