Step-by-step DIY guide with required tools/parts, safety tips, and easy engine-bay bulb swap instructions for 2019, 2020
🔧 Pathfinder - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Pathfinder, “headlight bulbs” can mean the low beams, the high beams, or both. The replacement is done from inside the engine bay by removing the rear dust cover and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you decide to disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative terminal first.
- ⚠️ Make sure the bulb is fully seated and the dust cover is sealed to prevent moisture in the housing.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the lights OFF.

- If your hands are tight on space, you can disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal and move it aside.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing
- Use a flashlight and look behind each headlight housing for the bulb location(s).
- Low beam is typically the larger rear cover closer to the center of the vehicle; high beam is usually a separate socket/cover.
- If only one beam is out, replace in pairs.
Step 2: Access the back of the headlight (left or right side)
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- If an air duct or small plastic cover blocks access, use a trim clip tool to release clips (lift the center pin, then pull the clip out).
Step 3: Remove the dust cover (if equipped)
- Reach behind the headlight and remove the rear cover by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
- Set the cover aside where it won’t get dirty.
Step 4: Replace the low beam bulb (H11) (if this is what you’re doing)
- Unplug the bulb connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight back.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull the bulb straight out.
- Install the new H11 bulb: insert it into the housing and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Do not touch the bulb glass.
Step 5: Replace the high beam bulb (9005) (if this is what you’re doing)
- Unplug the bulb connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight back.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull the bulb straight out.
- Install the new 9005 bulb: insert it into the housing and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall dust cover and any removed parts
- Reinstall the rear dust cover by turning clockwise until snug by hand.
- If you removed clips/covers, reinstall them using the trim clip tool (push the outer body in first, then press the center pin down).
Step 7: Repeat on the other headlight
- Perform the same steps on the opposite side so both sides match in brightness and color.
âś… After Repair
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm wrench and tighten securely.
- Turn the headlights on and verify: low beams, high beams, and no flickering.
- Check that the dust covers are sealed (prevents condensation inside the headlight).
