🔧 Elantra - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Elantra, the headlight bulbs can be replaced from inside the engine bay (no bumper removal for the common bulb setups). The key is to access the rear of each headlamp housing, remove the dust cap, swap the bulb without touching the glass, then re-seal everything so moisture doesn’t get inside.

Quick questions (so I point you to the exact bulbs): 1) Are you replacing the low beams, the high beams, or both? 2) When you look at the back of the headlamp, do you see a round twist-off dust cap (halogen setup) or an LED module/heatsink (usually not a simple bulb swap)?

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and let the bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the dust cap is fully sealed afterward to prevent fogging/water in the headlamp.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for a standard halogen bulb swap, but keep metal tools away from the battery positive terminal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip remover

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
  • If space is tight on one side, you may need to loosen and move a nearby duct/cover using a 10mm socket (we’ll cover that in the steps).
  • Torque specs: None required for the bulb retaining clip and dust cap (hand-tight only).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re changing (low vs high)

  • Stand at the open hood and look behind the headlamp assembly.
  • The headlamp usually has separate access points for low and high beam (two rear caps/connectors).
  • If you’re unsure, remove one bulb and read the bulb code printed on its base (that’s the most accurate way).

Step 2: Make room (only if your hand can’t reach)

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" socket extension to loosen/remove the bolts holding any nearby intake duct/cover that’s blocking access.
  • If there are plastic push clips, pop them up using a trim clip remover.
  • Move the piece aside gently (don’t force it). More space prevents broken clips.

Step 3: Remove the rear dust cap (halogen-style housings)

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use your hand (and a flashlight to see) to rotate the round dust cap counterclockwise and remove it.
  • Set the cap somewhere clean so dirt doesn’t fall inside it.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Use your hand to press the locking tab on the connector, then pull it straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—don’t pull on the wires.

Step 5: Release the bulb retainer and remove the old bulb

  • If your Elantra uses a spring wire retainer, unhook it by hand and swing it open (it stays attached).
  • If it uses a twist-lock bulb base, rotate the bulb counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • Pull the bulb straight out and note its orientation (take a quick phone photo).

Step 6: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)

  • Keep nitrile gloves on. If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with rubbing alcohol (if available) and let it dry.
  • Insert the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Lock it in place by re-clipping the spring retainer (by hand) or twisting it clockwise until fully seated (by hand).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and protect against corrosion

  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not a big glob).
  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks by hand.

Step 8: Reinstall the dust cap and re-secure anything you moved

  • Reinstall the dust cap and tighten it by hand until snug and fully seated (important for moisture sealing).
  • Reinstall any ducts/covers you moved using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Reinstall any push clips by hand (start them straight so they don’t bend).

Step 9: Repeat on the other headlamp

  • Perform the same steps on the other side so brightness/color matches.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for best match.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify: low beams, high beams, and turn signals all work.
  • Check that both dust caps are fully seated (a loose cap can cause headlamp fogging).
  • At night, confirm beam aim looks even left-to-right (if one looks “off,” the bulb may not be seated correctly).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,200-₹3,500 (parts + labor)
