How to Replace Low & High Beam Headlight Bulbs on a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder (H11 & 9005)
Step-by-step wheel-well access instructions, required tools/parts, and safety tips for quick bulb replacement

🔧 Pathfinder - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Pathfinder, the headlight bulbs can be replaced without removing the whole headlight assembly. Most of the time, you access the bulbs from behind the headlight—often through the front wheel-well liner for the low beams.
Assumption: Your Pathfinder has halogen headlights (common on S trim): Low beam = H11, High beam = 9005.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get extremely hot).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle safely if you lift it; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the ignition OFF while working.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Turn the steering wheel fully to the side you’re working on (this creates more room at the wheel-well liner).
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Make room to reach the headlight (wheel-well access)
- Turn the steering wheel all the way away from the side you’re working on.
- Use a flashlight to look into the front part of the wheel well and find the small access area behind the headlight.
- If access is tight, use the trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push-clips holding the front edge of the fender liner.
- If there are small screws/bolts, remove them with an 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Peel the liner back gently to create a hand-sized opening.
Step 2: Remove the low beam bulb (H11) on that side
- Reach behind the headlight and locate the low beam bulb socket (usually the larger/outer bulb).
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- Press the electrical connector tab and unplug the connector from the bulb.
- Put on nitrile gloves, plug the connector into the new H11 bulb, then insert the bulb into the housing.
- Twist the bulb clockwise until it locks. It should feel snug and fully seated.
- Tip: If you touched the glass, wipe with alcohol and let dry.
Step 3: (Optional) Replace the high beam bulb (9005) on that side
- Locate the high beam bulb socket (usually closer to the inner side of the headlight).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise to remove, then unplug the connector.
- Install the new 9005 bulb the same way: connect, insert, twist clockwise to lock.
Step 4: Re-secure the wheel-well liner
- Reposition the fender liner.
- Reinstall all push-clips using the trim clip removal tool (to align) and hand pressure to seat them.
- Reinstall any screws/bolts using the 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver #2.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Turn the steering wheel the opposite direction and repeat Steps 1–4 for the other headlight.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test: low beams, high beams, and turn signals.
- Verify both sides match in color and brightness.
- At night, confirm the beam pattern looks normal. If one side looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully seated.
