🔧 Grand Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the headlight bulbs are accessed from inside the engine bay (behind each headlamp). You’ll remove a small access cover, unplug the connector, twist the bulb out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Key off and remove key fob from the vehicle area to prevent auto-light activation.
  • ⚠️ If your Grand Cherokee has HID/LED (factory), the procedure differs; this guide assumes halogen bulbs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs (halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs (halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin area.
  • Put on nitrile gloves (they keep oil off the bulb glass).
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and identify low vs high beam access

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp housing.
  • You’ll see round bulb covers/ports and wiring connectors going into the back of the headlamp.
  • Tip: Low beam is usually the larger rear port.

Step 2: Remove the rear access cover (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool or small flat-blade screwdriver to release any clips or tabs holding the access cover.
  • Twist the cover counterclockwise or pull it straight off (varies by housing).
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get dirty.

Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Press the lock tab on the connector and pull it straight back off the bulb.
  • If it’s stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab while pulling.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base (not the glass) and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out.
  • Use a flashlight to note the bulb’s alignment tabs so the new one goes in the same way.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing, matching the alignment tabs.
  • Rotate clockwise until it locks into place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before installing.

Step 6: Reconnect the connector and reinstall the access cover

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
  • Reinstall the access cover (twist clockwise or clip back in place).
  • Make sure the cover is fully seated to keep moisture out of the headlamp.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side, then do the other beam (if replacing both)

  • Repeat Steps 2-6 on the opposite headlamp.
  • If you’re replacing both low and high beams, move to the other bulb port and repeat the same process.
  • Tip: Replace in pairs for matching brightness/color.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and test low beams, high beams, and turn signals/DRLs.
  • Verify both headlights match in brightness and color.
  • Check that all rear covers are installed to prevent condensation inside the headlamp.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, recheck the connector lock and bulb seating (it must be fully twisted/locked).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depends on bulb type)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
