🔧 QX50 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace your headlight bulbs from behind the headlamp housing. The key is getting safe access, removing the rear dust cover, swapping the bulb without touching the glass, and resealing everything to keep moisture out.
Assumption: Your QX50 has factory HID low beams (D2S) and halogen high beams (9005). Always match the bulb type printed on your old bulb.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (both sides)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ HID/Xenon systems can produce very high voltage; turn the lights OFF, remove the key, and wait 10 minutes before touching the bulb area.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamps cool before working (hot parts can burn you).
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, loosen the negative terminal only and keep it from springing back.
- ⚠️ Make sure the rear dust cover seals fully, or the headlamp can fog up.

- 10mm socket
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Fender cover
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam HID bulb (D2S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam halogen bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn the headlight switch OFF, remove the key, and wait at least 10 minutes (important for HID).
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- 🧰 Lay a fender cover over the fender to protect paint.
- 🔋 Optional but recommended for HID: disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket and isolate it so it cannot touch the post.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)
- Use a flashlight to look at the rear of the headlamp housing and identify the bulb location (low beam is usually the larger HID igniter area; high beam is usually a smaller halogen socket).
- Remove the bulb first, then read the bulb code printed on it to confirm (examples: D2S, 9005).
- If codes differ, buy matching replacements.
Step 2: Create working room behind the headlamp
- For tight access, remove nearby intake snorkel/clips as needed using a flat-blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, and trim clip removal tool.
- If a small bracket or cover uses bolts, remove them with a 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Set removed clips/bolts aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.
Step 3: Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped)
- Use your hands (with nitrile gloves) to twist the round dust cap counterclockwise and pull it off.
- Inspect the rubber seal for cracks or dirt; wipe clean so it seals later.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb connector
- For a halogen connector: pull the connector straight back (use a flat-blade screwdriver gently only if it’s stuck).
- For HID: carefully unplug the igniter/connector by releasing its lock tab (use a flashlight to see the tab clearly).
- Never force connectors; release the lock first.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- For many halogen bulbs: twist the bulb counterclockwise about 1/8 turn and pull it out.
- For many HID bulbs: release the bulb retainer (a spring clip or locking ring) and pull the bulb straight out.
- Keep the bulb oriented the same way it came out so you can install the new one correctly.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)
- Wear nitrile gloves and handle the bulb only by its base.
- Install the bulb in the same orientation as the old one (tabs must seat fully).
- Lock it in place by twisting clockwise (halogen) or re-engaging the clip/locking ring (HID).
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with alcohol (do not soak).
Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reseal the housing
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the bulb contacts).
- Reconnect the connector until it clicks/locks.
- Reinstall the rear dust cover and twist it fully closed so it seals.
Step 8: Reinstall any parts you moved for access
- Reinstall intake pieces, covers, and clips using the trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and flat-blade screwdriver as needed.
- If you removed 10mm bolts, reinstall with a 10mm socket and ratchet (snug them; these are typically small fasteners).
Step 9: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)
- Reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- 🔦 Turn headlights ON and confirm: low beams work, high beams work, and both sides match color/brightness.
- 🧭 Check the headlamp lens for fogging over the next day; fogging usually means the dust cap isn’t sealing.
- 🛣️ At night on a flat road, confirm beam aim looks even left-to-right (no glaring upward).
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $150-$450 (parts + labor, depends on HID vs halogen)
DIY Cost: $40-$250 (parts only, depends on HID vs halogen)
