🔧 Colorado - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Colorado, the headlight bulbs are accessed from inside the engine bay behind each headlamp housing. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb socket out, and install new bulbs without touching the glass so they last.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool; they get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep keys out of the ignition and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ If you choose to disconnect the battery, use correct procedure to avoid sparks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 1/4" extension (3")
  • Flashlight
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or small ft-lb range)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs on one side at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulbs you’re replacing (low vs high beam)

  • With the hood open, look behind the headlamp housing.
  • Use a flashlight to find the bulb sockets and wiring connectors.
  • Tip: Low beam and high beam are separate bulbs.

Step 2: Create access space (if needed)

  • If your hands don’t fit, move nearby intake/cover pieces slightly.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or small flat-blade screwdriver to lift plastic retainers.
  • Remove small fasteners using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" extension (3").
  • If you remove any 10mm bolts, reinstall them to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Tip: Don’t force clips; pry gently.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently help the lock tab release.
  • Tip: Pull on the connector, not the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grab the bulb base (the plastic part), not the glass.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock, then pull it straight out.
  • Tip: Note the alignment tabs before removal.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Still wearing nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks fully.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean dry lint-free cloth.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug the connector to confirm it’s fully seated.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side (and for the other beam if replacing both)

  • Repeat Steps 2-6 for the opposite headlamp.
  • If you’re also replacing high beams, repeat the same process on the high beam bulb sockets.
  • Tip: Matching bulbs keep color and brightness even.

Step 8: Reinstall any covers/ducting you moved

  • Reinstall any clips using a trim clip removal tool (to guide them in) and press them fully seated.
  • Reinstall any bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test low beams, high beams, and turn signals/parking lights.
  • Verify both headlights match in brightness and color.
  • At night, confirm the beam aim looks even; if it seems off, the bulb may not be seated correctly.
  • Tip: A crooked beam usually means a mis-seated bulb.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$140 (parts only, depends on bulb type)

You Save: $90-$110 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
