🔧 Suburban - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Suburban, the headlight bulbs are serviced from behind the headlamp housings under the hood. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.

Assumption: Your LS has halogen bulbs (common setup): H11 low beam and 9005 high beam. The steps below cover both.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes; they get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key OFF to prevent any lighting circuits from energizing while unplugged.
  • ⚠️ If you must remove the battery cable, disconnect the negative terminal first (not usually required for this job).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Clean lint-free towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (low beam, H11) - Qty: 2
  • Headlight bulb (high beam, 9005) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and use a small flashlight to identify the rear of each headlamp (low beam and high beam sockets).
  • Low beam is the most common “headlight out.”

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Use a small flashlight to look behind the headlamp housing.
  • Find the bulb socket you need: H11 = low beam, 9005 = high beam.

Step 2: Make room for your hands (only if needed)

  • If access is tight on the passenger side, loosen/remove the intake duct/air box fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • If a plastic retainer clip is in the way, pop it up gently with a flat trim tool.
  • Only move what you must to reach the bulb.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the connector locking tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently; don’t pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn), then pull it straight out.
  • Set the old bulb aside on a clean lint-free towel.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • Hold the new bulb by the base only (use nitrile gloves).
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots, insert fully, then twist clockwise to lock.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean lint-free towel before installing.

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Add a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the connector seal area (optional but helpful).
  • Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side and/or the other beam

  • Repeat Steps 1–6 for the other headlight bulb.
  • Repeat again if you’re doing both low beam and high beam.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 8: Reinstall anything you moved

  • Reinstall the intake duct/air box fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall any retainers using a flat trim tool to seat them.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the key ON and switch headlights ON to verify: low beams, high beams, and turn signals (if disturbed).
  • Walk in front of the Suburban and confirm both sides match in brightness and color.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, recheck the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully twisted/locked.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb brand/type)

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
