Assumption (quick note): Your Prius has halogen replaceable headlight bulbs. Some Prius Five trims came with LED low-beam headlights (no replaceable “bulb”; the headlamp assembly is serviced instead). The steps below cover the common halogen setup: Low beam H11 and High beam 9005.

🔧 Prius - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs from behind the headlamp housings in the engine bay. The key is to work with the lights off, avoid touching the glass, and make sure each bulb seats fully so it doesn’t leak moisture into the housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob 15+ feet away so the lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool 10-15 minutes; bulbs and housings get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force the bulb; misalignment can break the locking tabs or crack the housing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Flat trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and make sure the car is fully OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can see the bulb locks clearly.
  • Put on nitrile gloves; they help keep the bulb glass clean.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlamp: there are typically two round bulb access areas.
  • Low beam is usually the larger primary light used at night; high beam is the brighter “brights” light.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 2: Create working room (if your hands don’t fit)

  • If the passenger side is tight, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension to remove the small bolts holding the nearby intake duct/boxes as needed.
  • Move the duct/box slightly aside without yanking any hoses or wiring.
  • When reinstalling small 10mm bolts: Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that pops clips out without breaking them.

Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Use your fingers (or a trim removal tool gently) to press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • Do not pull on the wires—pull the connector body.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock.
  • Pull the bulb straight back out of the housing.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the locking tabs and the bulb’s orientation.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (critical seating step)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Push it fully in, then rotate clockwise to lock it.
  • The bulb should feel solid and not wobble once locked.
  • If you touched glass, clean with alcohol.

Step 6: Reconnect the connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/feels fully seated.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm it’s straight and fully on.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side and for the other beam

  • Do the same steps for the other headlight (left/right) and for the other bulb type (low/high).
  • If you moved any intake parts, reinstall them using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and extension, then Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the car ON and test low beams, then high beams.
  • Walk in front of the car and confirm both sides match in brightness and color.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn the car OFF and recheck the connector seating and bulb lock position.
  • Verify the rubber seals/caps (if equipped) are seated to keep moisture out.
