🔧 Highlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Highlander, the left and right headlight bulbs can be replaced from behind each headlight housing in the engine bay. The key is to replace bulbs without touching the glass and to make sure you’re changing the correct bulb (low beam vs high beam).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool first; bulbs get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you’ll be working near the battery/positive terminal, disconnect the negative battery cable first.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the headlight switch is OFF and keys are out of the vehicle.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight
  • 10mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and open the hood.
  • If desired for extra safety, use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable (black cable). This prevents accidental shorts.
  • Quick check: look at the bulb type stamped on the old bulb base to confirm H11 (low) or 9005 (high).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Use a small flashlight to look behind the headlight housing from the engine bay.
  • Low beam is typically the larger rear dust cover area and uses H11; high beam uses 9005.
  • If unsure, pull the bulb and read the label.

Step 2: Access the bulb at the back of the headlight housing

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlight housing on the side you’re working on.
  • If access is tight, reposition your hand and use a small flashlight to see the connector and bulb base clearly.

Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Use your gloved fingers to press the connector lock tab, then pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stubborn, gently wiggle while pulling—don’t yank on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Use a small flashlight to confirm the locating tabs (so you install the new one the same way).

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • Hold the new bulb by the base while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing, insert fully, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • If it won’t turn, it’s not seated.

Step 6: Reconnect the connector and repeat on the other side

  • Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other headlight (replace in pairs for matching color/brightness).

Step 7: Reconnect battery (if disconnected) and test

  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable using a 10mm wrench (snug only).
  • Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides illuminate.
  • Test high beams too, if you replaced 9005 bulbs.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn headlights ON and verify left/right brightness matches.
  • Check that the connector is fully seated (no flicker).
  • If one side doesn’t work, turn lights OFF and recheck bulb seating and connector lock tab.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$90 (parts only, depending on bulb brand/type)

You Save: $90-$160 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
