🔧 Sienna - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Sienna, the “headlight bulbs” can mean the low beams (regular nighttime driving lights) and/or the high beams (bright/flash-to-pass). Replacing them is usually done from behind the headlight housing and is a good DIY job if you take your time and don’t touch the bulb glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you raise the van, support it with jack stands before working near a wheel well.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the headlight switch OFF while unplugging bulbs.

- High beam headlight bulbs (typically 9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and set your flashlight so you can see behind the headlight.
- If your hands don’t fit behind the headlight, you may need the wheel-well access method (steps below).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)
- Turn the lights ON briefly and identify the failed bulb: low beam (normal), high beam (brighter).
- Turn lights OFF again and let the housing cool.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matched color.
Step 2: Access the back of the headlight housing (under-hood method)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- From the engine bay, locate the rear of the headlight assembly on the side you’re replacing.
- If a small cover/air guide blocks access, remove fasteners with a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension, and/or release clips with a trim clip removal tool.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Unplug the bulb connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use your fingers; avoid yanking wires).
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about a quarter-turn to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Hold the new bulb by the base only (not the glass).
- Insert the bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs, then rotate clockwise to lock.
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
- If you accidentally touched the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry lint-free cloth (or re-clean with proper bulb-safe cleaner).
Step 5: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–4 on the opposite headlight so both sides match.
Step 6: If you can’t reach (wheel-well access method)
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly using a 21mm socket and breaker bar.
- Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the wheel using the 21mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Peel back the front fender liner enough to reach the bulb:
- Remove plastic clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- Remove screws with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Replace the bulb using Steps 3–4.
- Reinstall the fender liner clips/screws using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Reinstall the wheel and snug lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
- Lower the van and tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20–150 ft-lbs): Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and verify left/right low beams (and high beams if replaced) work.
- Check that the beam pattern looks even on a wall/garage door from a short distance.
- If one side still doesn’t work, re-check the connector seating and bulb lock-in.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
