Step-by-step bulb replacement with required tools/parts, access tips, safety precautions, and final light checks for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
🔧 Ridgeline - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Ridgeline, the headlight bulbs are serviced from inside the engine bay (behind each headlight housing). The exact steps and parts depend on whether you’re replacing the low beam, the high beam, or if your truck has a non-serviceable LED headlight.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool before touching bulbs; they get very hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and headlight switch OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ If you must unplug connectors, pull on the connector body, not the wires.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Clean lint-free towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Put on nitrile gloves (keeps oil off the bulb glass).
- Have your flashlight ready; the bulb area is tight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which headlight type you have
- Look behind the headlight for a removable bulb socket (twist-lock style).
- If you find a twist-lock bulb with a wiring connector, you have serviceable bulbs (follow Steps 2-8).
- If the low beam is an LED module without a removable bulb, the low beam typically requires headlight assembly/module service rather than a simple bulb swap.
- If unsure, tell me: low beam, high beam, or both.
Step 2: Create working room (passenger side if needed)
- Use a trim clip removal tool or small flat-blade screwdriver to lift any plastic push-clips holding the intake duct cover/guide (if equipped).
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen/remove any small 10mm bolts holding the intake snorkel/duct (if it blocks access).
- Move the duct aside gently (you’re just making room; don’t force it).
Step 3: Locate the low beam and high beam bulb positions
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing.
- You’ll typically see separate twist-lock bulb sockets for low beam and high beam.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab by hand (or gently with a small flat-blade screwdriver if needed) and pull the connector straight off.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
- Place the old bulb on a clean lint-free towel.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)
- Keep your nitrile gloves on.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs so it seats fully.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place snugly (hand-tight only).
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug to confirm it’s fully seated.
Step 8: Reassemble any parts you moved for access
- Reposition the intake duct/snorkel.
- Use the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to reinstall bolts snugly (do not over-tighten).
- Reinstall push-clips using the trim clip removal tool to line them up, then press them in by hand.
Step 9: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same bulb type on the opposite headlight so brightness/color matches side-to-side.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for best results.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm low beams and high beams both work.
- Check that the bulb is seated: no flicker, and the beam pattern looks even.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
