🔧 Odyssey - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Odyssey, the headlight bulbs are serviced from behind the headlamp housing under the hood. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass (oil from fingers can shorten bulb life).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your Odyssey uses halogen bulbs (common on EX-L): low beam H11 and high beam 9005.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes (hot bulbs can burn you).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass—use clean gloves or hold the base only.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets (no reprogramming usually needed).
- ⚠️ Make sure dust covers seal fully to prevent moisture inside the headlamp.

- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4")
- Flat trim tool
- Torque wrench (inch-pound or small Nm range)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal and move it aside so it can’t spring back. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high beam)
- From behind the headlamp, locate the bulb sockets (two round twist-in bases).
- The connector and dust cover layout is tight—use a flashlight if needed (phone light is fine).
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
Step 2: Remove the electrical connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb base.
- If it’s stuck, use a clean shop towel for grip—don’t pull on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the bulb from the headlamp housing
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/8 to 1/4 turn (by hand) and pull it straight out.
- If there is a rubber dust cover, peel it back carefully by hand and set it aside clean.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (low beam H11 or high beam 9005)
- Hold the new bulb by the base only (with nitrile gloves).
- Align the bulb’s tabs with the housing slots, insert fully, then rotate clockwise until it stops.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean shop towel before installing.
- Apply a very thin smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall dust cover (if equipped) and reconnect the connector
- Reinstall the dust cover so it sits flat all the way around (this keeps moisture out).
- Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same bulb position on the other headlamp so both sides match.
- If access is tight, use a flat trim tool to gently move nearby plastic splash shields/ducting just enough for your hand—don’t force it.
Step 7: If you removed the battery cable, reconnect it
- Install the negative battery terminal and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and switch headlights ON.
- Verify low beams work, then verify high beams work.
- Walk around the front and confirm both sides match brightness and color.
- Check that no dust cover is loose (fogging/moisture later usually means a poor seal).
