🔧 Civic - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the headlight bulbs from inside the engine bay—no bumper removal. The key is not touching the new bulb’s glass (skin oils can shorten bulb life), and making sure the bulb locks fully into the headlight housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; use gloves.
  • ⚠️ If you remove the battery for access, disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Clean paper towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (9006 halogen) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005 halogen) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlight housing.
  • Decide which bulbs you’re replacing:
    • Low beam = normal night driving light (most common to burn out).
    • High beam = brighter “brights” when you push the stalk.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight. The bulb sockets are on the rear of the housing.
  • If you’re unsure, replace one bulb, test it, then do the other side.

Step 2: Make room for your hands (if needed)

  • Passenger side (tight access): grip the windshield washer filler neck and pull it upward to pop it out of its holder; set it slightly aside by hand.
  • Driver side (tight access): if your hand can’t fit, remove the battery hold-down:
    • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the hold-down bolts, then lift the hold-down off.
    • Only move what you need for access.

Step 3: Remove the bulb’s electrical connector

  • Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently help lift the tab while pulling (do not break the tab).

Step 4: Remove the dust cover (if equipped)

  • Some housings have a rubber dust cap over the bulb area. Pull it straight off by hand.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb’s locking tabs cleared the housing.

Step 6: Install the new bulb (no glass touching)

  • Put on nitrile gloves. If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean paper towel.
  • Align the new bulb’s tabs with the slots in the housing, insert it fully, then twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area (not the bulb glass), then plug the connector back on until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall anything you moved

  • Reinstall the rubber dust cover (if removed) by pressing it fully into place.
  • Re-seat the washer filler neck by pushing it back into its holder (passenger side).
  • If you removed the battery hold-down, reinstall it using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet (snug—do not overtighten).

Step 8: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Replace the matching bulb on the other side so brightness/color matches.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for best results.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify:
    • Low beams work (both sides)
    • High beams work (both sides)
    • No flicker and the connector is fully seated
  • At night, park facing a wall and confirm both beams are similar height and aim.
  • If one doesn’t work, turn lights OFF and re-check the bulb is fully locked and the connector clicked in.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb brand and whether low/high)

You Save: $90-$180 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
