🔧 Accord - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Accord, the headlight bulbs are serviced from the engine bay behind each headlamp. The key is to remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb to unlock it, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool 10+ minutes; bulbs get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection; tight spaces can snap clips/connectors loose.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and the headlight switch OFF while working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 10" extension

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005/HB3) - Optional, replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Optional - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to neutral, set the parking brake, and turn the headlights OFF.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlamp assembly.
  • Put on nitrile gloves; they help you avoid touching the bulb glass.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (Low vs High)

  • Use a flashlight and look at the back of the headlamp: the low beam (H11) is the main “headlight” used at night; the high beam (9005) is the bright “brights” bulb.
  • If unsure, switch lights on briefly, then off.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Use nitrile gloves to grip the connector.
  • Press the small locking tab (a little plastic “clip” that holds the plug on) with your thumb.
  • If it’s stuck, gently help the tab with a small flathead screwdriver, then pull the connector straight back.

Step 3: Unlock and remove the old bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves and grab the bulb base (the plastic part).
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise about 1/8 turn until it unlocks, then pull it straight out.
  • Keep the old bulb as a “match” to confirm the new one is the same type.

Step 4: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)

  • Use nitrile gloves and hold the new bulb by the base only.
  • Line up the bulb’s tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing, then push it in fully.
  • Twist clockwise until it stops and feels locked.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with alcohol on a lint-free cloth, then let it dry.

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal if you have it (it’s a silicone grease that helps keep moisture out).
  • Push the connector straight on until it clicks/locks.

Step 6: Repeat on the other headlight (replace in pairs)

  • Use the same steps on the other side so both low beams (or both high beams) match in color and brightness.
  • If access is tight on one side, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 10" extension to remove any small bracket/bolt that’s in your way, then reinstall it when finished.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work on low beam.
  • Turn high beams ON and verify operation if you replaced high beam bulbs.
  • Check that both bulbs are seated: if one looks dim, flickers, or the beam pattern looks “off,” recheck the twist-lock is fully locked.
