🔧 Silverado 1500 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Silverado 1500, the headlight bulbs sit inside the headlamp assemblies behind the grille area. The job is mostly removing the headlamp assembly, swapping the bulb without touching the glass, then reinstalling everything securely.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
- Let bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes; they get extremely hot.
- Wear gloves; skin oil on the bulb glass can shorten bulb life.
- Do not touch the new bulb’s glass. If you do, clean it with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
- No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which front-end style you have
- Look at how the headlamp assembly is retained from the top.
- If you see two long vertical metal pins you can pull up by hand, use the “Pin-retained headlamp” steps below.
- If you see two vertical metal retainers/clips near the radiator support that slide/pull up, use the “Clip-retained headlamp” steps below.
Step 2: Pin-retained headlamp (common on “Classic” style front end) — remove the headlamp assembly
- Use your fingers (or a trim clip tool if tight) to pull the two vertical retaining pins straight up.
- Set the pins aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.
- Use both hands to pull the headlamp assembly straight forward to release it.
Step 3: Clip-retained headlamp (common on “New Body Style” front end) — remove the headlamp assembly
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the locking tab (if present), then pull the two vertical retainers straight up.
- Use both hands to pull the headlamp assembly straight forward to release it.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Reach behind the headlamp assembly and locate the bulb socket you’re replacing.
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise (by hand) to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- Press the connector lock and unplug the wiring connector from the bulb.
- Tip: Take a photo so orientation is easy.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Plug the wiring connector onto the new bulb until it clicks.
- Insert the bulb into the headlamp housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Twist the bulb socket clockwise until it locks fully.
Step 6: Reinstall the headlamp assembly
- Slide the headlamp assembly back into place, lining up the guide pins/locators.
- Reinstall the retainers:
- For pins: push the two vertical retaining pins fully down by hand.
- For clips/retainers: slide the two vertical retainers fully down until seated.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps to replace the bulb on the other headlamp assembly.
- Use a flashlight to confirm connectors are fully seated.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and verify the replaced bulbs work (low beams and/or high beams).
- Check that both headlamps look even in brightness and color.
- At night, confirm the beam aim looks normal; if one looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully locked in.
