Step-by-step instructions with required tools/parts, safety tips, and quick checks if a new bulb won’t light for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
🔧 Camry - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the burnt headlight bulbs by accessing the rear of each headlamp housing from the engine bay, unplugging the connector, and swapping in new bulbs. The key is not touching the new bulb’s glass, because skin oils can shorten bulb life.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb; use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ On your Camry Hybrid, avoid pulling or stressing any orange high-voltage cables you may see nearby.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Qty: 2
Assumption: Your Camry uses halogen H11 (low) and 9005 (high). If your low beam has an HID/LED module (no removable bulb), the process is different.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to identify which bulb you’re changing: low beam is usually the larger rear dust cap area; high beam is the separate bulb next to it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Make room to access the rear of the headlamp
- On the passenger side, you may need to move the washer fluid filler neck for space (it usually pulls up/out of its clip).
- On the driver side, you may need to loosen the air intake/air box fasteners for hand room.
- If you remove any 10mm bolts, use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" socket extension, then reinstall them later to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Tip: Only move parts enough for your hand.
Step 2: Remove the low beam bulb (H11)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the low beam bulb connector.
- Press the connector tab and pull the plug straight back (no twisting). Use a flashlight if needed.
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it, then pull the bulb straight out.
Step 3: Install the new low beam bulb (H11)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing without touching the glass.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.
- Tip: If it won’t lock, it’s not aligned.
Step 4: Remove the high beam bulb (9005)
- Locate the high beam bulb next to the low beam area (separate connector).
- Press the connector tab and pull it off.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and remove it.
Step 5: Install the new high beam bulb (9005)
- Insert the new bulb (gloves on), keeping the glass clean.
- Rotate clockwise until locked.
- Reconnect the plug until it clicks.
Step 6: Repeat on the other headlamp
- Do the same low beam and high beam steps on the other side.
- If you moved the washer neck or air box, reinstall everything using the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Reinstall any clips using the trim clip removal tool (a forked tool that pops plastic clips without breaking them).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams work.
- Check that all connectors are fully seated and no wiring is pinched.
- If one bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector click and bulb lock position.
