🔧 Tundra - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Tundra, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight housings inside the engine bay. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool before touching bulbs/housings.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat trim tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs (typically H11 halogen) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs (typically 9005 halogen) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and open the hood.
  • If your lights are LED from the factory (rare on SR5), stop and tell me—LED units may not use replaceable bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)

  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing.
  • The low beam is usually the larger rear cap/bulb position; the high beam is usually a separate bulb closer to the inner side.
  • If unsure, turn lights on briefly to confirm.

Step 2: Access the bulb from behind the headlight

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlight housing from the engine bay (no bumper removal required on most Tundra setups).
  • If a wire loom clip or small plastic retainer is in the way, gently pop it free using a small flat trim tool.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb by hand.
  • If it’s stubborn, use the small flat trim tool to gently help lift the tab while pulling—don’t pry hard.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn (by hand), then pull it straight out.
  • Use the flashlight to note the bulb’s alignment tabs so the new one goes in the same way.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (no glass touching)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing, matching the alignment tabs.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place (hand-tight).
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before installing.

Step 6: Reconnect and secure everything

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks (by hand).
  • Reinstall any loom clips/retainers you moved using the small flat trim tool.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the matching bulb on the other headlight so color/brightness matches.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify low beams and high beams work on both sides.
  • Check that the connectors are fully seated (no flicker).
  • At night, verify beam aim looks even left-to-right. If one side looks “off,” the bulb may not be seated correctly—recheck the twist-lock.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
