🔧 Corolla - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the headlight bulbs from the engine bay without removing the bumper. The key is accessing the rear of the headlight, twisting the bulb socket out, and installing the new bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let the headlights cool fully before touching the housings or bulbs.
  • Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life). If you do, clean with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free towel.
  • Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key.
  • Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid contacting the bulb terminals with metal tools.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (9006) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Decide which bulbs you’re replacing: low beam (normal headlights) and/or high beam (brights).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the correct bulb at the back of the headlight

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing.
  • Low beam is typically the larger inner bulb; high beam is typically the other headlight bulb in the same housing.
  • Do one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the connector tab with your fingers and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—do not yank the wires.

Step 3: Remove the bulb from the headlight housing

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.

Step 4: Install the new bulb (no touching the glass)

  • Hold the new bulb by the plastic base (with nitrile gloves).
  • Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing and insert fully.
  • Rotate clockwise until it stops and feels locked.

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks/fully seats.
  • Gently tug-check that it’s locked.

Step 6: Repeat for the other side (and the other beam if replacing both)

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 on the remaining headlight.
  • If you’re also doing high beams, repeat the same process on the high beam bulb position.

Step 7: If access is too tight, create room (only if needed)

  • Some hands fit without this. If you can’t turn the bulb, you may remove nearby components for access.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet to loosen/remove a nearby fastener/hold-down as needed.
  • Reinstall any removed fasteners and Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Don’t overtighten small 10mm bolts.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify both low beams work.
  • Turn high beams ON and verify both high beams work (if replaced).
  • Check that the bulbs are seated: no flicker, and the beam pattern looks even on a wall/garage door.
  • If one doesn’t work, turn lights OFF and recheck connector seating and bulb lock-in position.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
