🔧 Civic - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You can replace the headlight bulbs from under the hood without removing the bumper. The key is accessing the bulb from behind the headlight housing and not touching the new bulb’s glass, which can shorten its life.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes; halogen bulbs get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; use gloves to prevent oil spots.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the ignition is OFF and keys are out before working near the radiator fans.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (9006/HB4) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005/HB3) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to neutral, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and wait for the bulbs to cool.
  • Lay out the new bulbs in a clean area; keep them in the package until you’re ready to install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing and identify the bulb location.
  • Low beam is the main night-driving headlight; high beam is the brighter “brights” light.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 2: Replace the driver-side low beam bulb (9006/HB4)

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Reach behind the headlight and remove the rear dust cap by turning it counterclockwise by hand (it’s a round cover).
  • Press the electrical connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
  • Release the bulb retaining spring clip (a metal wire clip). If it’s tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (do not bend it excessively).
  • Pull the old bulb straight out.
  • Install the new bulb in the same orientation (tabs must line up), then re-latch the spring clip.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the dust cap and hand-tighten.

Step 3: Replace the passenger-side low beam bulb (9006/HB4)

  • Repeat the same steps as Step 2 on the passenger side.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the spring clip is fully latched and the dust cap is seated evenly.

Step 4: Replace the driver-side high beam bulb (9005/HB3)

  • Locate the high beam bulb behind the headlight housing using a flashlight.
  • Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise (about 1/8 to 1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
  • Install the new bulb, then twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 5: Replace the passenger-side high beam bulb (9005/HB3)

  • Repeat Step 4 on the passenger side.
  • If access feels tight, work slowly and keep the bulb straight to avoid damaging the socket.

Step 6: Function check

  • Turn the ignition to ON and switch on the headlights.
  • Verify low beams work on both sides.
  • Switch on high beams and verify both sides work.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully seated.

âś… After Repair

  • Close the hood and verify the beam pattern looks even when shining at a wall at night.
  • If one side looks noticeably higher/lower, the bulb may not be seated correctly—recheck the tabs and retainer.
  • Keep the old working bulb as an emergency spare (if it still works).
