How to Replace Low Beam & High Beam Headlight Bulbs on a 2019 Subaru Ascent
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, safety tips, and install checks for both headlights

🔧 Ascent - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Ascent, headlight bulbs are accessed from inside the engine bay (behind each headlamp). You’ll remove a small access cover and twist the bulb out, then install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life); use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ Keep keys away from the vehicle so lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid contacting metal tools to the battery terminals.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (vehicle-matched) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (vehicle-matched) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see behind the headlamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing
- Look through the back of the headlamp area with a flashlight.
- The headlamp usually has separate bulbs for low beam and high beam (two different sockets behind the same headlamp).
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
Step 2: Create working room (if space is tight)
- On the tight side, remove any nearby ducting or covers by releasing clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- If a bracket or small fastener is in the way, remove it using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Torque: Not applicable (reinstall snug, do not over-tighten)
Step 3: Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped)
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the round/oval rear cover.
- Twist the cover counterclockwise by hand (or unclip it) and set it aside.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the connector tab with your thumb and pull the connector straight back.
- If it’s stubborn, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise (about 1/8 to 1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
- Note the bulb’s alignment tabs so the new bulb goes in the same way.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing, keeping the tabs aligned.
- Twist clockwise until it locks into place.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with alcohol and a lint-free cloth before installing.
Step 7: Reconnect and reseal
- Push the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
- Reinstall the rear dust cover and twist clockwise to seal.
Step 8: Repeat on the other headlamp and for the other beam (if replacing both)
- Repeat Steps 2–7 on the other side.
- If you’re replacing both low beam and high beam, repeat the process for the second bulb socket on each headlamp.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm low beams work on both sides.
- Turn high beams ON and confirm both sides work.
- Check that the rear dust covers are fully seated (this helps prevent moisture inside the headlamp).
