🔧 A4 - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
On your A4, the cleanest beginner-friendly way to replace headlight bulbs is usually to remove the front bumper cover and slide the headlight assemblies out. This gives you room to swap the bulbs without forcing parts or contaminating the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ HID/Xenon systems can generate very high voltage; turn lights off, remove key, and disconnect the battery before opening the headlight.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Never touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the bumper cover so it doesn’t scratch paint or pull on wiring.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended for both halogen and HID bulb work.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam bulbs (pair) - Qty: 2
- High beam bulbs (pair) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect paint.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. Wait 5 minutes before touching headlights.
- Assumption: Your A4 may have either Halogen or HID/Xenon headlights; bulb types and retention differ, so follow the matching steps below.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front safely
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the car at the approved front jacking point.
- Set the car down on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 2: Remove the front bumper cover fasteners
- Remove the lower splash shield/undertray screws using a Torx T25 bit and 1/4" ratchet.
- Turn the front wheels for access and remove fender-liner-to-bumper screws with a Torx T25 bit.
- Remove the upper bumper cover screws near the radiator support using a Torx T30 bit.
- Use a trim clip removal tool and small flathead screwdriver to release any plastic push clips without breaking them.
Step 3: Slide the bumper cover forward
- With a helper supporting one side (or you supporting the center), pull the bumper cover straight forward to release the side guides.
- If equipped, disconnect any bumper wiring connectors (fog/parking sensors) by pressing the lock tab using a small flathead screwdriver.
- Set the bumper cover on a soft surface to avoid scratches.
Step 4: Remove each headlight assembly
- Remove the headlight mounting bolts using a Torx T30 bit with a ratchet and extension.
- Carefully slide the headlight forward.
- Disconnect the main headlight connector by releasing the locking tab with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Reinstall torque when done: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
Step 5: Open the rear bulb access cover
- Use a flashlight to find the rear cover(s).
- Remove the cover by twisting or releasing the tabs by hand (no tool if possible).
Step 6: Replace the low beam bulb (choose your headlight type)
- For HID/Xenon (common on Premium Plus):
- Disconnect the igniter connector (the round/rectangular base on the bulb) by turning it slightly and pulling straight off by hand.
- Release the bulb retainer (usually a metal spring clip or a locking ring) by hand.
- Remove the bulb straight out.
- Install the new bulb without touching the glass while wearing nitrile gloves. Hold it by the base only.
- Lock the retainer back in place, then reconnect the igniter firmly.
- For Halogen:
- Unplug the bulb connector by pulling straight back.
- Release the bulb retainer clip or twist-lock (varies) by hand.
- Install the new bulb fully seated and reconnect the plug.
Step 7: Replace the high beam bulb (choose your headlight type)
- Identify the high beam bulb location using a flashlight (it will be a separate bulb from low beam).
- Unplug the connector by hand; if tight, gently assist the lock tab with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Release the bulb (spring clip or twist-lock) by hand and remove it.
- Install the new high beam bulb with nitrile gloves, ensuring it seats squarely.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 8: Re-seal the headlight and reinstall assemblies
- Reinstall the rear covers fully—these keep moisture out. If not sealed, bulbs can fail early.
- Reconnect the main headlight connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall headlight bolts using a Torx T30 bit and torque wrench: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the bumper cover
- Reconnect any bumper wiring connectors by hand.
- Slide the bumper cover onto the side guides evenly (don’t force one side first).
- Reinstall upper screws using a Torx T30 bit.
- Reinstall fender liner and lower fasteners using a Torx T25 bit.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test: low beams, high beams, and turn signals.
- Check for a headlight warning light on the dash.
- At night, verify beam aim looks even left-to-right; if one looks off, a bulb may not be seated correctly.
- If a HID bulb doesn’t light, turn lights off and re-check the igniter connection and lock ring seating.
