How to Replace Low Beam & High Beam Headlight Bulbs on a 2010-2018 Ford Fusion
Step-by-step wheel-well access guide with bulb types (H11/9005 or HID D3S), tools, and safety tips for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2018
🔧 Fusion - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Fusion, the easiest way to replace the headlight bulbs is usually through the front wheel-well liner (you reach the back of the headlamp from inside the fender). The exact bulb type depends on whether you have halogen headlights or HID (projector) low beams, so I’ll show both paths.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF, remove the key/fob, and keep it at least 10 ft away.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamp cool before touching anything (hot bulb/glass can burn you).
- ⚠️ If equipped with HID: the ballast can produce high voltage—do not power the lights while disconnected.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands before working in the wheel well.
- ⚠️ Do not touch bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- Battery disconnect: Not required for halogen; recommended for HID work (12V negative cable off).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 19mm lug nut socket
- 1/2" drive breaker bar
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3" extension
- 7mm socket
- 8mm socket
- Trim clip removal tool
- Flathead screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Torque wrench (1/2" drive)
- 10mm socket
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (halogen H11) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (halogen 9005) - Qty: 2
- OR Low beam HID capsule (D3S) - Qty: 2
- Fender liner push clips - Qty: 2-6
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn the car OFF, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on to open up space in the wheel well.
- If your Fusion has HID low beams: disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. Negative terminal is the “-” post.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which headlight type you have
- Look at the headlamp lens: a “projector” style low beam (round lens) often indicates HID/LED-style setup.
- If your low beam has a large square/round igniter base and the bulb is labeled D3S, follow the HID low beam steps below.
- If your low beam is a twist-lock halogen bulb labeled H11, follow the halogen low beam steps below.
Step 2: Loosen the wheel lug nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2" breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1 turn (do not remove yet).
Step 3: Raise and support the front corner
- Lift the car with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Set it safely onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) before working.
Step 4: Remove the front wheel
- Remove the lug nuts using the 19mm lug nut socket and take the wheel off.
Step 5: Pull back the front wheel-well liner
- Remove the liner fasteners using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket (varies by fastener type), plus a 3/8" drive ratchet and 3" extension.
- Pop plastic push-clips using a trim clip removal tool (this is a forked tool that lifts clips without breaking them).
- Gently peel the liner back to access the rear of the headlamp.
Step 6A: Replace the low beam (Halogen H11)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Unplug the low beam connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use a flathead screwdriver only if needed, gently).
- Rotate the H11 bulb counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn) and pull it out.
- Install the new H11 bulb (do not touch the glass), then rotate clockwise to lock.
- Add a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb) and reconnect.
Step 6B: Replace the low beam (HID D3S, if equipped)
- If not already done, disconnect 12V negative using a 10mm socket and wait 5 minutes.
- Remove the rear dust cover (if equipped) by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
- Unplug the igniter/connector carefully (pull straight back; do not twist wires).
- Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (usually a twist-lock ring). Turn counterclockwise and remove.
- Remove the D3S capsule straight out. Install the new capsule in the same orientation.
- Reinstall the retaining ring/lock, reconnect the igniter/connector, and reinstall the dust cover.
- Reconnect the 12V negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
Step 7: Replace the high beam (Halogen 9005)
- Locate the high beam socket next to the low beam at the back of the headlamp.
- Unplug the connector by pressing the tab and pulling back.
- Rotate the 9005 bulb counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn) and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb and rotate clockwise to lock.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal and reconnect.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel-well liner
- Reposition the liner.
- Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Reinstall push clips using your fingers or the trim clip removal tool to align them first.
Step 9: Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts
- Install the wheel and hand-start all lug nuts.
- Snug lug nuts in a star pattern using a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2" breaker bar.
- Lower the car using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Use a torque wrench (1/2" drive) to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lb).
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–9 for the other headlight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the car ON and test: low beams, high beams, and auto-headlamp function.
- Verify both bulbs are fully seated (a loose bulb can flicker or melt the connector).
- At night, check beam aim on a flat wall—if something looks wildly off, the bulb may be mis-seated.
- If you disconnected the 12V battery (HID path), confirm the clock and auto-up windows work normally.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: ₹1,500-₹6,000 (parts + labor, higher if HID)
