š§ Focus - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Focus, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlamp assembly under the hood. Youāll remove the old bulbs, install new ones without touching the glass, then verify low beams and high beams work correctly.
Quick questions (so I match the exact bulbs): 1) Are you replacing low beams, high beams, or both? 2) Do you have halogen headlights (normal yellowish light), not HID/LED?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ā ļø Let the bulbs cool down first; they get extremely hot.
- ā ļø Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
- ā ļø If your Focus has HID/LED equipment, stop hereāprocedures and parts are different.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (typically H11 halogen) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (typically 9005 halogen) - Qty: 2
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
- Make sure the headlight switch is OFF and the bulbs are cool to the touch.
- Lay out the new bulbs in their packages so you donāt mix up low vs high beam.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the bulb locations
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp assembly.
- The low beam and high beam each have their own bulb socket (they twist out from the back of the headlamp).
Step 2: Create working room (if needed)
- If your hands donāt fit, loosen the intake duct/air box area using a flathead screwdriver and/or remove fasteners with a 7mm socket or 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Remove any push-clips carefully with a trim clip removal tool (this tool slides under the clip and pries it up without breaking it).
- More space = less chance of breaking a bulb.
Step 3: Remove the electrical connector
- At the back of the bulb, press the connector tab and pull straight back by hand.
- If itās stuck, gently help the tab with a flathead screwdriver (donāt force it).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base (not the glass) and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Align the tabs on the new bulb with the slots in the headlamp, then insert it fully.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before installing.
Step 6: Reconnect and function-test
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Turn the headlights ON and verify that side works.
- Switch to high beams and verify high beam operation.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2ā6 for the other headlamp.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.
Step 8: Reinstall any removed intake/trim pieces
- Reinstall ducts, clips, and fasteners using a trim clip removal tool (for clips), and tighten fasteners with a 7mm socket or 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Make sure nothing is left loose near the radiator fan area.
ā After Repair
- Verify: low beams, high beams, and the headlight aim looks even side-to-side on a wall at night.
- If one side doesnāt light, re-check the connector seating and that the bulb is fully twisted/locked in.
- If a bulb burns out quickly, clean fingerprints off the glass and confirm the connector is not loose or overheated.
