🔧 GX460 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace your GX460’s headlight bulbs from the engine bay without removing the front bumper. The main “headlight” can mean the low beam (HID) and/or the high beam (halogen), so below covers replacing both sides for both bulb types.
Assumption: Your GX460 uses D4S HID for low beams and 9005 for high beams (common US-spec setup).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ HID systems generate very high voltage—turn lights off, remove key, and disconnect the battery before touching the low beam bulb.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool for 15+ minutes before working near bulbs and housings.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of halogen or HID bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ Secure the hood and keep tools clear of the radiator fans.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended: remove the negative cable first.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Flathead screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam HID bulb (D4S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Headlight dust cover gasket - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal: use a 10mm socket to loosen the clamp and move the cable aside so it can’t spring back.
- Keep bulbs in packaging until installed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create working space at each headlight
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight assembly (behind the lens, in the engine bay).
- If access is tight on the passenger side, use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the air intake snorkel bolts, then loosen any hose clamp with a flathead screwdriver and move the snorkel slightly for room.
- If access is tight on the driver side, use a trim clip removal tool to pop any plastic clips holding covers/ducting and move them aside.
Step 2: Remove the low beam (HID) dust cover
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- At the back of the headlight, find the larger round cover (low beam area).
- Twist the cover counterclockwise by hand to remove it. If it’s stubborn, gently help it with a trim clip removal tool (do not pry hard).
Step 3: Remove the low beam HID bulb (D4S)
- Locate the bulb base and connector inside the housing.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use needle-nose pliers only if needed, gently).
- Release the bulb retainer (typically a twist-lock ring): rotate counterclockwise and pull the bulb straight out.
- Do not touch the bulb glass.
Step 4: Install the new low beam HID bulb (D4S)
- With nitrile gloves on, align the bulb’s locating tabs with the slots in the projector.
- Insert the bulb fully, then lock it by turning clockwise until it stops.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Reinstall the dust cover and twist clockwise until snug.
Step 5: Replace the high beam bulb (9005)
- Find the high beam access at the rear of the headlight (usually a smaller socket area than the HID low beam).
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling back.
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb, twist clockwise to lock, then reconnect the connector until it clicks.
- Don’t force it—re-seat and try again.
Step 6: Reassemble any ducts/covers you moved
- Reposition the intake snorkel/ducting and reinstall fasteners using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) for small 10mm bolts on plastic brackets/duct mounts.
- Reinstall any push clips using a trim clip removal tool to align them, then press them in by hand.
Step 7: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the clamp using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test low beams and high beams on both sides.
- Verify the dust covers are fully seated (keeps moisture out).
- Check the beam pattern against a wall at night; if a beam looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully locked in place.
- If the HID low beam flickers or doesn’t ignite, recheck the connector and bulb seating. Do not swap sides while powered.
